McCain's Opportunity
[Promoted - Allen makes the case for McCain to pick Eric Cantor as VP. I don't have a favorite yet, so it's interesting to see the case made for potential candidates. - Jon Henke]
Frankly, I've grown weary of the ad nauseam repetition of the fact that Obama and the Left are cleaning the clocks of McCain and the Right on the web. Having been reared as a conservative in New York I am battle tested in fighting against long odds and making progress. Occasionally we actually score big victories by successfully taking on big challenges.
As I've watched McCain make successive wrong political decisions I have concluded that McCain needs help from outside his political brain trust. If McCain is to get traction on the web and on the ground his campaign needs to get the attention and win the support of grassroots Republicans and conservatives.
Probably his last big opportunity to this will be with his selection of his running mate.
That decision will speak volumes about where his campaign is going. I believe he will blow this opportunity to impress and mobilize his candidacy if he looks back and chooses a Romney or a Huckabee. McCain needs to recruit a young, articulate, energetic, conservative who has the proven ability to communicate a vision for the future that will resonate with the Republican base a beyond.
There are a few young Republicans who fit this profile but the best of the bunch is Congressman Eric Cantor.
Time and again, Cantor has proven he can hold his own and take the offensive on the tube and on the web. Those of us who are working in the internet trenches know that Cantor is one of the most innovative politicians when it comes to communicating on the web. He has been at the leading edge of Republicans using the web to communicate (which would introduce a new element to the McCain ticket. McCain's personal discomfort with technology is hindering his web efforts.)
Moreover, Cantor will bring other important attributes to the ticket. He is popular in the battleground State of Virginia, he is popular with Jewish voters, he is a proven vote getter among Christian conservatives (who are the dominate voting bloc in his District), and he will broaden the appeal of the McCain ticket to younger voters who are not turned on by McCain's Viet Nam War experiences.
And, perhaps more importantly, Cantor is a principled conservative who represents the views of economic, social, and security voters.
For these reasons and a few others a group of concerned Americans who refuse to stand on the sidelines and watch McCain struggle have decided to try and rev up the Republican base by providing them with a platform to promote a true dynamic conservative to the race for the White House. If you don't know Cantor you can watch videos and read about him at :

On the subject of running mates
I think McCain needs someone from outside the Beltway. A member of the other house of Congress is not the way to go. While Cantor brings things to the ticket othrs might not, he is a member of Congress from a state that has been reliably Republican in presidential elections from 1968 to to now. A much better choice for VP under McCain in my opinion is popular, two-term South Carolina governor Mark Sanford. Sanford is the best candidate to reassure conservatives and possibly even some libertarians about McCain. This is going to be a cycle wherein much of the South could be competitive, so having the support that a young, popular southern governor could provide is essential to victory in November.
I don't know.
McCain needs to recruit a young, articulate, energetic, conservative who has the proven ability to communicate a vision for the future that will resonate with the Republican base a beyond.
Hard to argue with that. The problem is that McCain himself is pretty hostile to conservatism, youg and energetic or otherwise.
I can think of plenty of names he could pick if he were inclined to go in this direction. Trouble is, he's not.
There are plenty of worthy conservatives
And Cantor is one of those at the top of the list. He will help in Virginia and Florida and his youth will help connect with young conservatives who are not involved (for obvious reasons) with the McCain campaign.
You know what? I love this guy!
Laura Ingraham just did an interview with him this week on her new Fox program, "Just In". He's affable, smart as a whip (heh - no pun intended of course), and shares "I'm a heck of a real nice guy" angle with T-Paw.
I also love Thad McCotter. I'm a T-Paw fan myself at the moment, but I'd be very happy with Cantor, McCotter, Palin - any of the young guns. I can see how Cantor could be a really strategic pick. Why shoot for someone to bring in their home state when you can cast your net wide enough to embrace Democratic and Independent Jews, Economic conservatives, and single women (he's a Nice Jewish Boi who's rilly cute, girls).
Jonathan Martin at Politico has good things to say about him, also.
Democratic and Independent Jews
who'd vote Republican? Why, I bet that that's a category that includes a whole two hundred people!
Going after the Jewish vote is a bigger waste of time than going after the black vote. If they don't vote for us now then they never will.
In Florida Cantor and Jewish Vote Could Make the Difference
I am old enough to remember Reagan getting 40% of the Jewish Vote which enabled him to win New York. If you read the neo-cons, try Commentray, American Thinker, et. al. you will see evidence that the Jewish community has serious problems with Obama. In Florida, there are hundreds and thousands of Jewish votes that a Cantor can help deliver to a McCain ticket. I remember reading a quote made by Nixon in 1972 that his Jewish strategy was based on the analysis that Jewish voters always vote and when they vote they overwhelmingly vote Democrat. He concluded from this that if you conviced a Jewish voter to stay home it actually meant the Democrats lost a vote. If you convinced him to vote Republican you should consider it a net total of two votes.
Cantor would help deliver a bunch of those two votes.
I don't buy it.
If there are Jews stupid and bigoted enough to not vote Republican unless there is a Jew on the ticket, they are not people we want in the party . There are tons of good reasons why Jews should vote GOP. This sort of ethnic pandering is not one of them.
I'm tired of the party reaching out to the left and tossing people out to the right.
Reagan Did Not Have a Jew on the ticket
And the Jewish vote went from 90-10 Democrat to 40 Republican. I am not talking about pandering. There are volumes of evidence that an Irish Republican is likely to get more Irish votes, an Italain is likely to get more Italian votes, and so on. Cantor will not change his conservative stripes but it is more likely to get some more Jewish votes.
How does that help your argument?
Reagan did not have a Jew on the ticket. And the Jewish vote went from 90-10 Democrat to 40 Republican.
I think you're making my point for me.
I'm not sure you mean to come off like this,
but do you have any idea how bigoted and stupid what you wrote might look like to someone who's considering voting Republican? Some people might come to this site to learn, and some people are eminently qualified to teach. Please reconsider squandering your considerable resources on cutting less experienced Republicans off at the knees when you could be one of the best qualified people out here to make the case for conservatism in a really positive, constructive manner. Reagan and Buckley certainly wouldn't bar the door to anyone who wants to vote Republican, and they'd be charitably helpful to pointing those who could use some guidance and education on what conservative principles and values are.
I think you have so much to offer - you're intelligent, knowledgeable, and I've read several of your posts in other blogs. If you could add "tolerant", "reasonable", "patient" and "instructive" to that repertoire, you'd be even more an asset to the GOP than you already are.
(LOL that's meant for Jon, as opposed to Allen btw!)
Additionally, if you could please drive your intellect over to
the blog post on the topic of FISA (and the dawn of the post-netroots era) and break that issue down for me as to why it constitutes an atrocity, I'd be much obliged. I've seen plenty of opinion, but not enough fact on the subject to help me understand the key objections.
Since you ask so nicely
I'll have a look. Not really my area of expertise though.
Please get a grip.
Reagan and Buckley certainly wouldn't bar the door to anyone who wants to vote Republican
I'm hardly "barring the door to anyone who wants to vote Republican". I'm pointing out that the GOP is constantly seeking out new left wing voters and discarding right wing ones, and that this has coincided with it's slide in popularity.
do you have any idea how bigoted and stupid what you wrote might look like to someone who's considering voting Republican?
Unless they are stupid and bigoted people (and that describes the typical liberal) then they will see nothing stupid or bigoted in what I wrote. We should not be pandering to people, and that includes Jews. Given their left wing views, maybe especially Jews.
VP pick
"McCain needs to recruit a young, articulate, energetic, conservative who has the proven ability to communicate a vision for the future that will resonate with the Republican base a beyond.".............................
How does this disqualify Huckabee? Puts him at the top of a short list if you ask me.
Huckabee is disqualified because...
He only adds credibility to the McCain candidacy with some social conservatives, and does nothing to help McCain in libertarian or paleoconservative circles. I would suggest Mark Sanford instead for a McCain Veep pick.
So?
McCain needs help with social conservatives as much or moreso as with libertarains.
I can't even imagine any paleocon voting for McCain, regardless of his VP pick.
McCain is pro-life
McCain is pro-life and against same-sex marriage. It's not social conservatives he will need that much help with, it's potential Bob Barr voters.
I agree with J, and it appears that Dr. Dobson's rejection
of Obama's interpretation of Gospel has "awakened the sleeping giant" of evangelicals in a big way. Three evangelical friends of mine have become McCain supporters almost overnight - and all because of Dobson.
We agreed that Dr. Dobson probably cannot openly endorse McCain, as that would go against his principles and Dr. Dobson isn't exactly known to be a flip-flopper. However, he and Governor Huckabee can mobilize a mighty army to vote against Obama.
It seems that Obama went off the rails initially by conflating Dr. Dobson with Al Sharpton. I believe this is what we generally call an apples to oranges comparison. CitizenLink, which appears to be a professionally produced PAC and information clearinghouse for Christian conservative values, has the videos and speeches here.
And here is Obama's Call to Renewal keynote address. He makes a valid point here:
He seemed to be reeling us in with some good, common sense in that last bit, but in today's context this next bit stretches his credibility a great deal in terms of his own church and pastor:
Another spin off the rails, especially since his record indicates that he voted for partial birth abortion:
