For too many years official Washington has been on a spending spree.  We must take steps now to restore fiscal responsibility.  An economy in trouble requires all of us, politicians in Washington, as well as every day Americans, to exercise fiscal responsibility. 

The American people have made it clear that they value fiscal responsibility in their elected officials.  Managing public money is a matter of public trust.  The American people have elected each member of Congress to safely manage their money. 

I have consistently called for a Balanced Budget Amendment.  I believe that is the first step toward restoring fiscal responsibility.  Once Congress is required by law to balance the budget, we will be able to eliminate fraud and wasteful spending. 

We must learn the important lessons of this economic crisis.  Record deficits are not the answer.  Paying $800 billion a year just to service our debt is not the answer.  Increasing government spending during these tough times is not the answer.  Restoring fiscal discipline is the answer.  By doing so we will become wise stewards of taxpayer money and at the same time we will be taking the necessary steps to protect the future of our young people.

I know that the economy continues to be the most important challenge facing us today.  Unemployment is at its highest rate in the last 26 years.  The American people are struggling to pay their bills.  But they are doing exactly that.  Every pay day they balance their budget.  They cut spending where they have to in order to do that.  How can Washington do any less?

Absolutely not, but it is time for strong leadership in Washington. We must begin to take fundamental, positive steps to reduce the deficit. We need to act responsibly, to stop the out of control spending and to work together to get the economy back on track.

As Ronald Reagan said, for too long our government has operated on the following premise: “If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. If it stops moving, subsidize it.” It’s this kind of thinking that’s led to massive expansion of government into the private sector and led to our growing national debt.

To say that we can't indefinitely sustain deficit spending is an understatement. Don't let anyone tell you that increased government spending doesn't affect each American. The average American worker now has to labor 111 days just to pay for federal spending, according to Monika Ciesielska, from the Center for Fiscal Accountability. She writes that although tax freedom day actually dropped ten days this year over the previous year, the Cost of Government Day advanced nearly a month.

Personally, I think Washington needs to take a deep breath and take their hands out of taxpayers’ pockets. Because I firmly believe leadership isn’t a knack for spending taxpayer money, but instead leadership is realizing when not to spend money and when you have to, knowing how to stretch each dollar in a positive direction.

Now is the time to cut spending, look for waste and not take on new programs that we can't afford.

All of us have watched the raucous debate across the country regarding health care. It is good to have a public discussion about such an important issue. But both sides have engaged in some conduct that reasonable adults would not.

Recently, the White House posted on their web site a release called "Facts Are Stubborn Things". The White House Director of New Media, Macon Phillips encouraged citizens to report "fishy" speech opposing the Obama Health Care Bill to the White House. Phillips wrote "If you get an email or see something on the web about health insurance reform that seems fishy, send it to flag@whitehouse.gov."

Why do they want this information? What are they going to do wit it? Instead of monitoring the free speech of American citizens, the White House should be focusing on the economy and the creation of jobs.

The White House should set the tone for the Country. This isn't the way to do it.

We are still clearly in an economic crisis. I am pleased that the jobless rate went down slightly in July, but the truth of the matter is that the economy is still losing jobs. July marked the 19th month in a row of losses. Unfortunately most businesses are not hiring. We need to do what we can to help reverse this situation.

When I read a statement by the chief executive of a hiring agency Adecco, Tig Gilliam who said "This is a very good jobs report, given where we are in the cycle, but we're still losing 250,000 jobs. The other thing we need to remember is that we need to add 100,000 jobs a month in the U.S. economy just to stay steady."

That is sobering news of the challenges facing the nation.

The Administration needs to focus on jobs and the economy and forget the partisan politics of asking Americans to report other American's "fishy" emails.

For the first time in the history of our great nation, the deficit has reached $1 trillion.  Experts predict that federal spending could very well exceed revenues by almost $2 trillion by this fall.

There is no question that the deficit has increased dramatically, in large part because of the so-called stimulus package of almost $800 billion.  Congress hastily enacted the bill in February without any thought or strategic planning. I opposed the bill because it exploded our national debt without providing any meaningful economic growth. Since the bill was signed into law, we have lost two million jobs and unemployment has reached a 26 year high of 9.5 percent.

American families have always known a basic economic fact that politicians in Washington, DC just can't seem to understand - you can't spend more money than you have!! Not a difficult concept, is it? I certainly learned the concept as a businessman and in raising my family. Most Americans live by that very basic rule. But they just don't get it. Maya MacGuineas, president of the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget recently said, "Most anybody who's being honest knows we've reached a point where we've got a very dangerous fiscal situation, and it won't fix itself." Too bad Washington hasn't been listening.

I will continue to oppose the reckless spending of official Washington at every opportunity. I have said many times, I am a businessman, not a politician. I have created jobs, met payrolls and balanced budgets. I know what makes a strong economy and just as importantly I know what will harm our economy -higher taxes, more overly burdensome regulations, and ballooning deficits are not the answer. You and I know that the last thing we need in these difficult economic times is an out of touch Congress and President who increase taxes and spend your hard-earned dollars in a reckless manner.

Federal revenues are down 17.9 percent from a year ago. And yet government spending is at an historic high. The American people understand the need to cut personal spending and live within their means. What will it take for Washington to follow the lead of the people who put them all in office?
