President Dave Kovic?

In his weekly address, President Obama announced today that he has "begun scouring our budget line by line for programs that don't work so we can make room for those that do... it means reinstating the pay-as-you-go rule that we followed during the 1990s - so if we want to spend, we'll need to find somewhere else to cut."  He went on to add "Finally, in the coming weeks, I will be announcing the elimination of dozens of government programs shown to be wasteful or ineffective.  In this effort, there will be no sacred cows, and no pet projects.  All across America, families are making hard choices, and it's time their government did the same."

For a kid who grew up loving Kevin Kline's title character in Dave making room for a homeless shelter by cutting payments to non-performing contractors and an ad program to make people feel better about cars "they've already bought," this is music to my ears, and I would really love to see the Obama administration follow through on this.

Any recommendations on where those cuts should be made?

the whole Obama deal has been about self-esteem

He makes the folks driving Volvos to the Whole Foods Market feel so much better about themselves and their country. Now we don't have that inarticulate Texas WASP cowboy George W. Bush to embarass us.  So that's the "Dave" angle

As for cutting spending, trust me, Obama will make sure it involves programs that either promote Republican agenda items (the F-22) or support Republican demographic groups or Republican states

We already know  that fixing the economy is less important than political correctness to the Democratic party.

If you were president...

Thanks for the response.  So, if you were president, where would you make the cuts instead?  Part of being an effective loyal opposition is articulating real ideas and, frankly, that's the part where we seem to be failing the most right now.  We're doing great at opposing, but I'd like to see us offer more than Obama-bashing rhetoric.  So, where would you make cuts in ways that focus more on fixing the economy than political correctness?

Nate says that Republican districts have recieved more help than Democratic districts from the Stimulus.

sorry to burst your bubble.

Not hiring thousands of community organizers would be a start

You obviously have me confused for a future OMB director.

My area of expertise is real estate law. They've already squandered billions on mortgage bailout plans with little hope of success but the political exigencies suggest  both parties would have done something expensive in this realm.

I question the very premise that you and other "responsible Republicans" advance. We didn't lose the 06 and 08 elections because the Democrats offered such a compelling set of alternative ideas. Many of the ideas they did offer (a race out of Iraq; paygo) were jettisoned as soon as they won; they were simply boob bait.

Why do we need to engage in a futile effort to impress the MSM as to our agenda's wisdom?. The other side won due to pure opposition; let them enjoy their own medicine.

I don't think that 06 actually included a Democratic win

(not with war-is-fun Lieberman as the 51st vote!)

It did however consitute a devastating Republican loss. ;-)

We're headed out of Iraq... just a little more slowly than Obama promised.
