Overheard in line at Starbucks (of all places):
Why are Republicans so obsessed with Prosperity? Broad based prosperity is bad for the planet. I don't want prosperity.
I regret keeping my mouth shut.

Ah, you could have talked to
Ah, you could have talked to them all day and not gotten anywhere.
My co-worker, age 28, informed me she "worships Stalin"
I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so I laughed at first, thinking it was a joke. "No, really!" she insisted, "he was so wonderful - he really got things done, he led his country really well and got us ot of the War!".
"The war?" I asked, "by that I'm assuming you mean World War II, right?"
"Yup!" she replied, nodding her springy spiral curls (she's an adorable child, really precious with the possible exception of her predilection toward 20th Century genocidal totalitarian tyrants).
"You realize, of course, that the man was responsible for the deaths of millions of people during the Great Terror, in which he spied on non-revolutionaries, imprisoned them in slave labor camps, and murdered anyone who disagreed with him or his policies?" I asked, incredulous.
"Oh, I know that, but nobody's perfect!" she bounced back at me, grinning.
"Well," I said, "I mean, that's pretty much the complete antithesis of why this country was founded. Basically people wanted to get away from dictators and crazy mobs. Back then, anyway. I mean it's a free country and all, and you can choose to believe whatever you like and interpret history any way you prefer, but I would pose the suggestion that rather than modifying a free country to make it more like the Soviet Union under Stalin, you might simply want to emigrate to a nice totalitarian country where they already have a dictator in place. Oh, and by the way, Stalin didn't end World War II, actually he started it. In 1939 he signed a non-agression pact with Hitler and followed Hitler's invasion of Poland with his own about a month later. I'm just sayin'."
This was followed by our typical liberal/conservative "aw gee, we're never going to agree on this so let's just agree to disagree" detente, which was followed a few minutes later by an overwhelming sense of nausea coming over me in the ladies' room. All this time I'd felt that Obama had bamboozled and hoodwinked these innocent, dumb, naive voters and it had never, until this week, occurred to me that they actually want him to uh...control the entire country. Wait - aren't these the same people who were screaming about violations of civil liberties during the Patriot Act implementation? No, those must be some other breed of liberal, the kind of liberal most likely to align with conservatives and libertarians next time around.
There will be a next time around, right? Won't there?
Off to the re-education camp with you!!!
Don't you know that George W. Bush (with an assist from Ronald Reagan and Newt Gingrich) was responsible for the great terror?
OMG, if you only knew
Just for you I reached back into my bag of bloggery for a little-known tribute to exactly what you suggest.
It was discovered in an almost completely obscure film series by Confederate Yankee and socialized by Pajamas Media, which is how I tripped across it. I grew up in the Cold War, and had seen the films of the victims of the Gulag slave camps and read Alexander Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago.
Be amazed. Check out Weather Underground video surfaces indicating that the Counter-Revolutionaries "will be eliminated" - my inspiration to start reading what they are writing and saying, and not just what we are.
Knowing nothing about how
much of the rest of the world lives, too many don't know what the reverse of prosperity is like. For example, Angola's average annual income is under $1,400. But, like your student, few care about the abject poverty of others, as long as they themselves have their piece of prosperity.
