I'm speechless at this. Huckabee endorses Don Young:
Don is one of the few members of Congress to totally understand the critical state of our nation’s infrastructure and when I was a Governor and Chairman of the National Governors Association, he was one of the few members of Congress who fully recognized the direct link between infrastructure and job creation and economic development. I consider him a personal friend and have enjoyed duck hunting with him, but I didn’t enjoy the fact that he is such a marksman that he put the rest of us to shame” Huckabee said.
Last winter, I was pretty vocal about the fiscal right calling off its jihad against Mike Huckabee. The primary reason John McCain and not Mitt Romney was the Republican nominee is because the right decided to focus single mindedly on destroying the un-nominatable Huckabee rather on the rising McCain.
Ever since, I've been interested in the idea of a reconciliation between the two camps. We've welcomed Governor Huckabee to The Next Right and hope to welcome him again. But moves like this show there's a lot of work to do before the fiscal and social wings of the party can unite again.
In a nutshell, the Club for Growth, Huckabee's arch-nemesis, has swung into action behind Sean Parnell. So, Mike Huckabee decides to return the favor by backing corrupt porker Don Young.
Even his blog commenters are slamming this endorsement. As Ambinder reports:
"You blew your reputation on this...and a reported 70% of Alaskans disagree with you," said one. Another: "This the best HuckPAC can come up with????" A third: "You have one problem with Don Young and it's called "The Bridge To Nowhere""
Huckabee's followers understand enough about fiscal / social conservative fusionism that you don't throw your weight behind an unelectable Republican whose "Bridge to Nowhere" branded the Congressional GOP as beyond redemption. And you don't do it by touting his ability to bring home highway funds!
Huck may feel some spite towards the Club and its allies, but this conflict is wholly manufactured. His grassroots understands that you don't get behind the AFL-CIO's favorite Republican. This could have been a great unifying moment: Huckabee and fiscal conservatives get together to kick out Don Young. Instead, Huckabee has just needlessly reopened the wounds of the primary season.
Contribute to Sean Parnell now.
