Gingrich for VP
Submitted by EaBo Clipper on Wed, 08/27/2008 - 08:10
John McCain should shock the world and pick Newt Gingrich for his Vice Presidential running mate. There is no one better suited to go to intellectual war with the Democrats. Newt Gingrich would show Joe Biden to be the intellectual lightweight that he is. Newt brings baggage sure, but Newt on the ticket is what I'm looking for.

Hmmm
Newt is smart as a whip, that's for certain. And I feel bad for anybody who presumes to debate him. He's incredibly knowledgeable, quick thinking, and knows how to make a soundbite.
Having said that, I don't think he adds to the ticket. He does have baggage, and he just ticks off a good portion of the American public.
Besides that, I don't think we want two people on the ticket with such obvious marital issues.

High profile and will put the conservative base back on the train.
He has negatives, but so do any other choices.
I have and even better idea though, instead of proposing a name that McCain will file and forget: LET THE CONVENTION DECIDE.

I like the idea
But the devil would be in the details. Secondly, picking the VP on the floor could very easily overshadow the nomination of the president itself by the news media -- something the news media would be predisposed to do -- not to mention throwing the timing off of this otherwise carefully scripted media show.
But the suggestion itself reflects a fundamental misunderstanding of the present relation between the political parties and the political elite. While many believe the presidential and vice-presidential nominees are extensions of the party's nomination process, nothing could be further from the truth. Political parties nowadays are nothing more than political props, designed to fool as many people as possible into believing their party's nominees represent their political interests.
overshadowing
well, it would be on different days. And lets face it, these conventions are mere informercials now. Not very interesting. I think 4 days is enough to get a VP selected *and* put a message out on the POTUS nominee.
But it would blow the Democratic Convention out of the water.
Thank God McCain and the RNC aren't successful media thinkers. Just imagin, McCain nominated by the first or second day, leaving full two days of wild floor fights, with numerious state roll calls, backroom manueverings, more roll calls...it would show the people the Republican Party's convention really is a convention of its members.
But, again, the political ruling class would never, ever allow the people to see such a raw display of ...well, democracy. The next thing you know, the people would wake up and demand more and then where would they be?

Gingrich for Sec of Ed.
I don't know that having as VP would add any pluses to McCain's column. There has to be some appeal beyond energizing the conservative base.
