Democrats Tax Problems Extend Beyond the Beltway
Given all the talk about Obama's nominees and their problems paying taxes, you might believe these issues are confined to inside-the-beltway Democrats. Apparently not.
This piece in today's Politico suggests Democratic congressional candidate Scott Murphy (NY-20) has some tax problems of his own. Murphy will face New York Assembly Minority Leader Jim Tedisco in a special election to fill the seat vacated by Kirsten Gillibrand who was recently appointed to the Senate. Politico writes this:
"Murphy has been the Democratic nominee for less than a week, but already he finds himself on the defensive for not paying thousands of dollars in taxes on a start-up computer software company he owned more than a decade ago."
Democrat Murphy seems out of step with the standard set recently by White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said this about two Obama nominees that withdrew due to non-payment of taxes. Here's Gibbs:
“I think they both recognized that you can't set an example of responsibility but accept a different standard in who serves. They both decided and recognized that their nominations would distract from the important goals and the critical agenda that the president put forward.”
The Democrats' tax problems are part of a growing narrative taking root among Republicans. For example, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) said this recently at the GOP retreat last weekend according to Politico:
It’s easier for the other side to advocate for higher taxes because you know what?” Cantor asked the crowd.“They don’t pay ‘em,” the crowd hollered back in unison.
Not a great start for the Democrats in NY-20, a seat many believe is a toss-up.

Really? You guys want to go there?
The GOP - the home of waterboarding, of wide-stanced airport-bathroom sex seekers, of under-aged page daters - wants to start impugning other people over tax issues? Tax issues that were immediately paid up once they came to light?
You really want to do this?
Could it be that you have already forgotten corrupt Republicans like Vito Fossella, and his drunk driving, out-of-wedlock baby issues?
Or Idaho Republican Larry Craig, who propositions cops in airport bathrooms?
Or Florida Republican Bob Allen, who also seeks sex from cops in public bathrooms, and who is frightened of black people?
Or Louisiana Republican David Vintner who likes high-class call girls?
Or how about Ohio Republican Donald Lukens, who prefers sex with 13 year old little girls?
Or Alaska Republican Ted Stevens who enjoys having lobbyists pay for his home remodeling projects?
Or everyone's favorite junkie, Missouri's own Rush Limbaugh?
I'd hate to leave out Mitt Romney's aid, Matt Elliott, who was busted for sleeping with a 14 year old.
Jeez, I could go on like this for DAYS... Libby Lewis... Richard Nixon... G Gordon Libby... The list goes on and on and on.
You guys might want to rethink your tactics here. You know, glass houses and all that.
Yes, we do.
Because, whatever Larry Craig or David Vitter did, it's yesterday's news. You guys are in charge now. Your man occupies the big chair. It's your party's responsibility to actually lead; the strategy of "bash Republicans" isn't going to work anymore. So yes, BY ALL MEANS I would love for Obama to try to justify Geithner's tax cheating by saying "but Republicans did it too!" It will only show him to be the whiny unprepared leader that we tried to warn you about.
Aren't paying taxes "patriotic"?
Far be it for me to criticise anyone else's patriotism, but it seems the Vice President is on the outs with much of his own party on that score.
BTW, I think the President we have now was still doing blow when some of the events on that guy's list occurred. I'm not sure the Democrats are eager to go too far back into the past.
On a more serious note, if the NYS Republicans are doing their homework and not just photo ops with Steele; they'll do a little digging into Murphy''s background on two fronts where I would strongly suspect even better material is to be found.
a) His St. Louis real estate ventures. I can be reasonably sure they were paid for primarily through the use of taxapyers subsidies. This is the old "public-private partnership": the public pays the bill; the private guy gets the public
b) Voting record in Glens Falls. Methinks he never cast a ballot in NY State prior to the millenium, and probably missed lots of elections since. Since missing elections is one reason Kennedy got nixed and Gillibrand got picked; this would be another sweet irony.
Look for stuff on those fronts to go public.
"
You've GOT to be kidding me.
BY your logic, no Democrat could ever complain about Republican corruption because of what Tammany Hall did in the 1870's.
You are not really about change are you.
