Connecticut as a Battleground State?

Good news from Connecticut. -Patrick

On the day the Democratic nomination stumbled to a conclusion, Sen. John McCain showed that he is capable of winning Blue States like good old Connecticut.

Today, Rasmussen Reports showed that McCain had all but erased a sizable lead in the polls to Sen. Barack Obama, now trailing the presumptive Democratic nominee by three points, within the margin of error.

According to Rasmussen : The latest telephone survey in Connecticut finds Barack Obama attracting 47% of the vote while John McCain earns 44%. Given that choice, 4% would opt for “some other candidate” while 5% are not sure.

This is very encouraging news for Republicans in Connecticut. We have always felt that Sen. McCain’s positions and personal story and long record of being a maverick would play well in our state. The numbers indicate that, and they are even more amazing considering how the Democrats have dominated the news for the last two months.

The Report adds: In early March, Obama led McCain by twelve percentage points. However, that poll was conducted before Obama’s controversial former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, became part of the campaign dialogue. Currently, Obama is viewed favorably by 57% of Connecticut voters. That rating is down ten percentage points since March.

McCain is viewed favorably by 54%, down four points from the previous survey.

In Connecticut, Obama leads among voters under 50 while McCain has the edge among older voters. McCain is supported by 77% of Republicans and has a five-point advantage over Obama among unaffiliated voters. Obama leads 67% to 21% among Democrats. Twelve percent (12%) of Democrats say they would vote for a third-candidate or are currently undecided.

McCain leads among voters who earn $40,000 to $75,000 annually. Obama leads among those who earn less than $40,000 a year and among those who earn more than $75,000.

Excellent

I've been continually impressed with the Connecticut Republicans since Chris Healy became chairman.  And now that we finally have a candidate at the top of the ticket that can shake things up it should be an exciting year in the Nutmeg State.
