Republicans Have Their Nominee for Virginia Governor in 2009
We often forget that 2010 isn’t the only big election around the corner. In Virginia and New Jersey, gubernatorial elections are occurring and Republicans have their candidate:
Attorney General Bob McDonnell became the 2009 GOP nominee for Governor on Friday. That was the state party’s deadline to file paperwork to seek the nomination at next year’s convention. Nobody filed to oppose McDonnell. Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling (R) is unopposed for renomination. Three Republicans filed for McDonnell’s open AG spot. The Dem deadline to run is not until next year. Incumbent Governor Tim Kaine (D) is term-limited.
McDonnell has the advantage of having already been elected Statewide. Plus at this point, former DNC Chairman, Terry McAuliffe has got to be considered a frontrunner for the Democrats. McAulliffe has never impressed me as particularly likable and this is a winnable race for Republicans in a newly blue state. This election is important as redistricting is coming up.
From all I’ve read, McDonnell’s a good man. Here’s his website. Hopefully, donation links will be coming soon.

Democrats ae worried and they should be about VA
In 2009, the state GOP will have worked very hard to be rebuild itself, while the VA Dems will be sobering up from their Obamagasms. This is a satet that since 1977 has had an interesting trend going for it, the party that won the whitehouse loses this state's governorship the following year. This year is shaping up to continue this trend. Even Va Dems admit McDonnell is the best statewide candidate the GOP has had since George Allen. Not only are they trying to maintain an open seat, but the party is trying for a majority in the state House of Delegates. They really don't have the resources after working their butt off to turn the state blue for the Obamessiah to focus on both goals. This could be a very GOP election in VA, for the first time since 1997.
Now the carpetbagger charge doesn;t always work
See H. Clinton (D-NY) and M. Romney (R-MA) but Terry McAuliffe is a native of Syracuse, NY who spent his early adult life wheeling and dealing in FL. Unlike tranplanted yankees Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, McAuliffe didn't deign to stand for election for a lesser office in the Commonwealth before thinking he oughta be Governor. Not sure VA is that blue yet.
