It's a 70's thing. You just wouldn't get it
For those that think we don't have to work this year. -Patrick
Often in the blogosphere I feel a tad bit out of place. For example, I had to have explained to be that "Gnarls Barkley" was not a relative of the power forward.
This is because I actually lived through "That 70's Show". And no, Demi Moore did not date me after it was finished.
But I think I have some insight from living through that bygone era. There is nothing good about losing an election.
Frankly, I get a sense that many in the Right are much like Karl Rove--they presume there is a Republican majority out there that has always and will always exist, and it has only been kicked away by feckless politicians. Once the whacko left gets back in, the voters will be on the hands and knees begging us to get back into office.
This might be what happened after some chick dumped Ashton Kutcher, but this is not how politics always works. if an incumbent party can unload enough pork barrel on the public, gin up the right divisive wedge issues, and sic a biased press on opponents, it can stay in power quite a while.
I think it is easy for the under 40 crowd to think if we lose this year we will have a quick pit stop out of office. After all, for 26 of the last 28 years we;ve controlled either the White House or Congress. In that brief interlude, that we were out of power the voters saw the light and rewarded us with one of our greatest triumphs in 1994.
Well, lets look at the 28 years before 1980. While we held the White House for 16 of those years, we held Congress for two. For 12 years in that period we held neither the White House or Congress. The congressional majorities for the Democrats were usually massive and the Republicans in Congress eager to make nice most of the time.
I truly think you had to live through the Carter years to understand how profounding dispiriting total liberal control of government can be. No. the Bee Gees and John Travolta were far from the worst aspects of this era. What we had was the expectation of unending national decline and increasing government direction; except of course for permissive crime and social policies. Want an idea of what was up---go grab the "Bronx is Burning" miniseries and see what was going on around the Yankees in the late 1970's. Our cities WERE burning. And the period from 1974- 1980 had to be the worst period in American foreign policy for decades before and afterwards.
I see from the "McCain will ruin the party" crowd the absolute and completely unjustified belief that we will have another 1993-1994 and we will come roaring back from a defeat. I don;t see it for a varierty of reasons. Does anyone think we have a Newt Gingrich, or even a Bob Dole running our operation on the Hill? Isn;t it obvious that a McCain loss will be blamed on the entire party, whether it is deserved or not?
It may be no use explaining--hey would a Yankee fan in 1963 believe his team could go a decade wihout sniffing the postseason? But in politics it can and does happen.
Unlike most of the cyberpunks out there I did my purgatory in an era of liberal dystopy already . Want to be a martyr, grab a pew on Sunday.

Jive talkin
Of course the Bee Gees and Travolta weren't the worst of it. There was Debbie Boone and Barbra Streisand.
Well, as a cyberpunk(?) who barely remembers the Reagan administration, let alone anything earlier, I appreciate you providing your perspective.
Out of curiosity, do you call yourself Ironman as a reference to the comic book character or the masochistic endurance sport?
"Ironman"
You forgot about the one I ronman that I think it is:
The Black Sabbath song.
I AM IRON MAN
Has he lost his mind
Can he see or is he blind?
Can he walk at all,
Or if he moves will he fall
Is he live or dead?
Has he thoughts within his head?
We'll just pass him there
Why should we even care?
He was turned to steel
In the great magnetic field
When he traveled time
For the future of mankind
Nobody wants him
He just stares at the world
Planning his vengeance
That he will soon unfold
Now the time is here
For Iron Man to spread fear
Vengeance from the grave
Kills the people he once saved
Nobody wants him
They just turn their heads
Nobody helps him
Now he has his revenge
Heavy boots of lead
Fills his victims full of dread
Running as fast as they can
Iron Man lives again!
Amen
Give McCain his head...let him do what he needs to to win. Those 4 years will give us precious time to regroup.
Considerably less damage can be done during that timeby his administration than by BO's in my humble opinion.
If the dems get in, they've got at least a one term grace period from the public during which 8 yrs of Bush can be the scapegoat for any lack of progress....which would be preferable to uberliberal progress anyway.
We don't see a republican in the whitehouse for a decade if BO wins..
Hmm.
You've pointed out a fear I've had for quite a while now. Everyone has said that as soon as the democrats get into office, they will implement bad policies and be kicked out. And with some of the things they are planning, that may well be the case.
However, I fear that the masses for the large part, won't see that the policies hurt them. They won't blame it on the democrats so easily like they will if it was a republican. The media will cover for the democrats, and the democrats will continue to reign.
Maybe the fear is a little too much, but If possible, I don't like to depend on the bad policies of the democrats to scrunge up a new Reagan and a conservative uplifting.
Another fear I have, is that because of the huge turn left and because of the policies the democrats implace. We will have republicans that become utterly frightened about removing them. programs that are huge entitlements and aren't really the responsibility of the gov't, but because it would be political suicide to remove them, that shy away from such talks. Take Bush for example. He talked about privatizing SS, and we have Medicare Part D.
I fear a huge turn left, a very huge turn left. At the very least, I would have wished for a democrat that was not about Big gov't, I could forgo issues like abortion or same sex marriage, I doubt they are really on the top of people's radars, but the destruction of our capitalistic republic frighten's me, But maybe I'm just worrying to much and it won't really be as bad as I made it out to be, or there really will be a Reagan. Time will tell.
100 percent behind you
Ironman. I'm sick of the "we need to lose for the good of the conservative movement" argument. I care more about America's well being than the Republican Party's well being or conservatism's well being.
I don't necessarily see us getting back into government quickly if big Dem majorities are racked up. What's to say that most voters blame Dems for everything. The media won't hold them accountable. And Dems do have a talent for survival, which can trump their ideological agenda.
It is not worth an Obama presidency to teach the GOP a "lesson".
The Damage Done
I'm 41, & remember the Jimmy Carter years. We are still reaping the results of damage done in those 4 years. Let's go to 1992, which ushered in 8 years of Bill Clinton. We did get congress back in 1994, however we're still learning the damage done to our intelligence infrastructure. Experience is a very costly education - we've seen what can happen. If a child is about to touch a red-hot stove eye, the painful burn will undoubtedly teach the child to not do it again - however, is the scarring worth it?
That said, McCain needs to get off of it & give us something stronger to support. Ignoring the base is not a good way to win. It seems that this election may boil down to which candidate is least disliked by his base...
