Looks like Mac will be back

The one AZ Democrat who could beat McCain in 2010 is joining the Obama cabinet.

I don;t know what ripple effects this has on the rest of AZ politics, but this has to help us. I am unaware of the AZ Democrats having a similar figure in the wings so if Mac wants another term, he'll probably get one.

Ripple effects
The biggest ripple effect would be that AZ Sec of State Jan Brewer (R) would become Governor until 2010, and she could run as the incumbent. Brewer seems to be a traditional Republican. AZ is one of few states with GOP controlled House and Senate chambers. The chambers have pushed some innovative legislation that Napolitano (D) vetoed (including statewide school choice). Would the GOP try to take advantage of two years of full control? Would they wait until Brewer tries for an outright electoral victory as GOV?
And it means 2010 has Brewer and McCain as incumbents in their races. Who would challenge them in that case? There are now 5 D congressmen (and 3 R congressmen). So there is a bench.
