Mac's bad picks

I am concerned with much of the argument about V.P. picks. It seems sadly reminscent to me of the Miers debacle, where a host of well qualified  jurists had their names floated and then saw the shots come in (too old, too young,  too hard-line, wrong gender etc. ) So we saw the sad spectacle of the Bushies trying to pass off a close friend as a top level jurist--mostly because it appeared Harry Reid sorta didn't much mind her.

The downside of punching holes in the rationale for Romney and Pawlenty is we might well get some second tier candidate whom the McCain team incorectly thinks is a good pick because they haven't been bashed lately--perhaps because the punditocracy, the party establishment and the blogosphere perceive the candidate as so unviable as to be unworthy of criticism.

We need to "Miers-proof" this process as well as critique the frontrunners. So here are my list of very lame dark horses---the type of picks that will put Mac in a deep hole he can;t dig out of .

Some of these people are great in their field. But they would not be of any use in getting Mac elected.

1. Lindsey Graham. No redeeming social value to this pick . At all.http://rightblog.zubrcom.net/ironman/the-worst-possible-mac-veep-pick

2.  Kay Bailey Hutchison  If we want a pro-choice candidate, a non Texan might have a better shot of trying to end up in the net vote dept. Much of America says "No New Texans"

3.  Haley Barbour A great example of politics being very unfair. One of the best Governors in America, but past life as a lobbyist and an accent you could cut with a fork, well... as I said, not fair, but.

4.Fred Smith of Fed Ex : You do not want to know how hated Fed Ex is amongst the union movement. Lots of working stiffs will covertly stiff Obama in the comfort of the polling place unless we throw a red flag like this at them.

5. John Engler. Wife on Freddie Mac board. Since I expect them to be seeing Hank Paulson with the tin cup to start Q 4....nope.......   .

6. Jon Huntsman  the Mormon Governor nobody knows. UT is our best state already.

7. Joe Lieberman. One more time. He won't flip CT, but will flip out much of the base.

Let's air the dark horses now and get this out in the open. I do not want another "Miers moment" August 29.

Here's another one.

8. Condoleezza Rice. An obvious sell-out selection chosen for demographic reasons, Dr. Rice has George Bush written all ovr her. Choosing Secretary of State Rice would bolster the "Bush third term John McSame" hysterics of the Democratic Party.

But Condi didn't go through the spring trashing McCain, did she?

The Democrats have basically got the commercials ready to go in case McCain picks the Ken Doll. Look, Romney could be a good SecDef, perhaps, but he trashed McCain up one side and down the other, and provided the Democrats with tons of golden moments.

Condi did none of that.

BTW, Pawlenty can't even guarantee his own state, I should add. However, unlike Romney, he was smart enough not to try for Socialism in One Country in his home state.

Of all of the one's who've been aired, Rice is the only one who passes the Dick Cheney test (with the possible exception of Jeb Bush and Fred Thompson, but life isn't fair.). McCain has to think about two things: campaigning and governing.

The problem with the Conservative Movement right now is that it's trying to saddle McCain with a two bit phony like Romney (who ran as a dyed-in-the-wool liberal in MA) and Pawlenty, who is too dadgum new to get elected on a nationwide scale and who nobody in the country really knows.

You can have a running mate that will warm the heart of Phyllis Schlafly, or you can win the election. Take your choice.

Valid points, except...

You fail to explain why this makes Dr. Rice a winning option. We are talking about a woman who has won fewer elections than Tim Pawlenty, or Barack Obama for that matter.

Romney's attacks

The thing is is that most of romney's attacks in the primaries were highlighting McCains divergions from the conservitive consensus, and for not being republican enough. Can democrats really air ads of romney that highlight McCains mavrickness and moderation. I would think that would only help him with the general electorate.

Also I think you are too hard on Romney's record in Massachusetts. It is unreasonable to expect him to have governed as a true reagan conservitive, this is massaachusetts. We really must grade blue state republicans on a curve, they have to make comprimises to mesh with the voters values and beliefs, otherwise they'd never be elected. Romney was a far, far better than any democrat that would have been elected instead. Just look at Patricks term so far.

Too Bad about Engler

I thought Engler deserved serious consideration--two-term former MI governor, strong on economics, Catholic--, but I didn't know about the Freddie Mac thing.  Thanks for the info.

Add Romney to the bad picks list

The truth about Romney is being revealed in "An Open Letter to Rush Limbaugh" and I was told by one of the authors it will be sent out as a news release.  McCain's campaign has already been notified.  There are some pretty impressive signers on the list, too.  McCain would need his head examined if he picks Romney.  If the link doesn't work it's posted in the reader submitted articles section of Real Clear Politics and is on the page with 10 or more votes.

I'm not a Romney guy. . .

. . .and I stopped supporting him in December in favor of McCain.  I don't think he's the best candidate for VP, but I don't think he's the worst of all possible nominees, either.

That being said, I find the way that the link above is constructed is terribly deceptive.  The people listed are NOT signatories, and they shouldn't be presented as such.  I find it unethical.
