New allies for the cause: Organic Farmers

We may have a new ally in fighting the onward march towards socialism. Organic farmers are up in arms against Rep. Rosa DeLauro's "farm safety" bill.

Republicans may not have been at Woodstock, but we also don;t think the New Deal was too timid, either.

And why shouldn;t there be fear. It's not like the thrift store industry hasn't been jerked around.

Our granola famers are now confronted by the fact that they are bit players in the world of Corporate Democrats.  And Ms. DeLauro is the poster child. Former Chief of Staff to Chris Dodd.  , whom she had a funny looking land deal with.  Landlord to Rahm Emanuel . Spouse to millionaire political consultant Stan Greenberg.

Message to cabbage growers in Killingworth. Maybe the party that is more aligned with small business might work out a little better for you. Some of us already eat organic food. Time to make a deal, I say.

both parties are in bed with Monstersanto.

I'm happy with my CSA, myself.

Question

I'd like to see people on this site take an issue like this and try to craft viable, common-sense policy...not just latch on too it as a way to ride our horse back into the White House.  Don't just tell the cabbage growers in Killingworth that we'll be better for them.  Explain in EXACT detail what good goverance/competent governance looks like for them.  People will respond to that.

I'll do the first one to show how it is done.

The issue of food safety seems pretty important.  Not requiring Joe and Jane farmer to spend a bunch of money to be in line with federal laws aimed at coporate farms seems important too.  What if they only require the increased standards be applied to farms with a yearly gross income over a certain amount...say $500,00 a year or something?  Additionally, exempt certified organic farms of any size.

Bam.  How hard was that?

I still want the standards applied...

but I'm willing to allow that someoen without gov't provided access to the internet might not be the best person to ask to make everything "electronic" -- as it is putting an undue burden on them to communicate to the government.

Work should definitely be done to make sure that this is as easy as possible for the small farmers...

((also, what about a tax credit for purchasing a 'new' computer, up to $300? -- linux rocks))

Another thing: stop the rampant genetic engineering big ag. corps like Monsanto from removing people's ability to collect seed from their plants and plant them the next year.

There are laws ont eh books which allow Monsanto to intimidate and lawyer drop small farmers into oblivion.

These twain have been extensively covered on DailyKos.

but...

You're going to have a tough sell, given the Republican rape of the environment. I'm a part-time market grower (organic), and the malice resulting from the last eight years of environmental pillaging runs deep among the organic growers that I know.

It would seem like a bi-partisan no-brainer for both parties to come together against GM food -- but both sides are too deep in the pockets of Big Ag.

Here's another DeLauro triumph

Report: Ethanol raises cost of nutrition programs

Congressional estimate: Ethanol could cost government $900 million on nutrition programs

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Food stamps and child nutrition programs are expected to cost up to $900 million more this year because of increased ethanol use.

Higher use of the corn-based fuel additive accounted for about 10 percent to 15 percent of the rise in food prices between April 2007 and April 2008, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office. That could mean the government will have to spend more on food programs for the needy during the current budget year, which ends Sept. 30. It estimated the additional cost at up to $900 million.

I might also note that due to higher feed costs, the last dairy farmers left in DeLauro's home state are about to go under. Way to go Rosa!!!!!

Did I mention her husband does work for Big Oil? I'm sure that has nothing to do with her obsession over ethnanol.
