New York Times, Charity Case?

The report that David Geffen is considering purchasing the New York Times and "convert[ing] it into a nonprofit institution" makes me wonder if the New York Times is suddenly regretting their editorial criticizing "rich benefactors [who] can spend on anything they want, and they tend to spend on projects close to their hearts."

I'm guessing a non-profit New York Times will have a remarkably fast change of heart on their support for capping deductions for charitable giving, and on their suggestion that "the government should demand a role in charities’ allocation of resources in exchange for the tax deduction. Or maybe the deduction should go altogether."

academic leftist

Jon,

I wish you were right - but I doubt it.  These aren't your run-of-the-mill liberals, they are Academic Leftists.  They feel no compunction against advocating any pie-in-the-sky left-of-center view, even ones that unwittingly aren't in their profession's best interest.  To actually take into account the views and situation of their employer when formulating an editorial position would just be wrong!  Worse, it would be...corporate.  And that is of course a dirty word in Academic Leftist circles.  So I have no illusions that even a non-profit NY Times will continue to advocate the orthodox liberal position.

Delivering a speech in front

Delivering a speech in front of the mob is disquieting. One must be very careful with the word that he utters for audience’ ears are more sensitive in  mistakes rather than the good content of your message. Brian Jennings has an axe to grind.  Brian Jennings is the author of Censorship, a book about how conservative talk radio is a target of censorship by the Obama administration and others.  The books website, censorshipbook.com, has more details.  The book comes out right before the Henry Waxman's investigation of talk radio, and also an upcoming set of FCC hearings on the matter.  Largely, it has to do with conservative talk radio run amok, which is restricting free speech.  It is worth payday loans and more to preserve the freedom of speech, even if you don't agree with what Brian Jennings has to say.

From what I've been seeing

NYT is a nonprofit institution. They are leaking cash faster than the Obama administration.

I doubt that this group of entitled elitists will even recognize their gaff. After all, in the world of elite leftists, rules are for other people. Couldn't possibly apply the same standards and regulations on their own organization that the want inflicted on organizations they view as inferior.

that's the same with all elitists.

don't let your politics blind ya

I'll keep that in mind

Hopefully, no one will be flying a private jet to this event.

Obama made the remarks Monday during a town hall meeting in Elkhart, Ind., where the president traveled to muster public support for economic stimulus legislation.

"You can't get corporate jets, you can't go take a trip to Las Vegas or go down to the Super Bowl on the taxpayer's dime," Obama said.

Since they are all on "the public dime" it looks kind of hypocritical. But I'm sure Obama didn't mean Reid or himself, this, after all is important business.

the rules

No no, you don't understand.  It's just the evil fat cat capitalist corporate pigs who don't deserve to fly in jets to Las Vegas.  Harry Reid and Barack Obama, well, they NEED to go to this fundraiser, to keep Harry in the Senate, so that he will be able to stop the Republicans' dastardly efforts to throw Grandma onto the street, eat baby flesh, and strangle small, cute puppies.  So you can understand why the rules don't apply to them.

I just hope Obama doesn't decide to do another one of those photo-op things with Scare Force One in Las Vegas.

since when do the republicans like masturbation?

sorry, sorry. I'm actually enjoying your hyperbole, it's rather fun.

sad to say, we really do think the president needs to

show up for these sorts of things.

at least he doesn't GET FILTHY STINKING DRUNK while there and disrespect our Veterans who were waiting for him back home...

Bless my mayor's dear heart, eh?

NCNA seems quite glad to spend the taxpayer's money

gladhanding...

The Arlington event, properly, was paid for from Cantor campaign funds. But, as Roll Call reported, leadership aides on Cantor’s House staff, paid by taxpayers, do the lion’s share of the organization’s work.

The NCNA’s Web site, WeThePeoplePlan.org, was designed by a House staffer and directs visitors immediately to Cantor’s leadership Web site — all taxpayer-funded.

just an fyi

Then that's "stimulous"

Trying to revive the economy!

LOL!
