What the right needs to do to regain acceptance and credibility by the mainstream

The right has lost its way and a lot of people are starting to recognize this.  Books are being written (The Death of Conservatism, Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the Party, etc.)  Here are my thougths on what is wrong and what needs to be done about it.

Discredit those who are not helpful

Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee, etc. have said a lot of downright crazy and dumb things (people with AIDS should be quarantined, etc.)  and are far too tied to Christianity.  They should be called out for that and pushed to the side so that true leaders on the right can rise to the top and give the right a real chance at regaining credibility and the minds of those who are undecided or in the center.  Those who espose hate, and anger should also be discredited and pushed to the side (Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, etc.).  It is long past time for Conservative talk radio to become more academic, constructive, and hopeful sounding, and cater to the best in us (love, hope, unity, civics, etc.), rather than the worst (fear, anger, race, etc.).

Stop catering to the Christian right

Christianity has nothing to do with conservative ideas and theory on money, foreign policy, etc.  There is also supposed to be a strong seperation of church and state.  Our country was formed partially for freedom of religion, and if our government is run by someone who wants to impose their religion through laws and perspective, then we lose that.  In addition, America is not a Christian nation; though nearly 80% are Christian, there is still another 20% that are not.

Stop simply opposing every idea President Obama has and propose alternative solutions

The right has really been a thorn in our Presidents side instead of working with him to solve the problems in America.  The way to gain credibility and get some conservative ideas into law is to honestly work with the left to create good policy, and also proactively propose laws to solve some of our problems before the left takes up the problem.

Stop supporting causes that have nothing to do with Conservative ideology

The right should disassociate itself with such issues as abortion, and other things that are outside of the ideas of conservatism.  Abortion is an issue thats argument against it is primarily based in religion.  The same applies to marriage equality for gays; the argument against it can only be made from a religious standpoint.  Because of this, and because no party should be tied to any religion, just as our government should not be tied to any religion, the right as a whole and Republicans as a party should disassociate theirselves with abortion and start supporting equal rights for gays.  These two issues alone keep some of those in the center and on the left from ever supporting a Republican candidate.  It might cause a lot of those on the Christian right to be upset, but then they can choose the party that best conforms to what their idea of government should do on all other issues, or form a new 3rd party that is tightly tied to Christianity.

Stop being inconsistent

Right now many on the right are opposing government run health care on the idea that even though it may save a lot of lives, it isn't proper for the government or taxpayers to help others.  Yet, many of those same people are in support of the war in Iraq to give people in another country freedom and save their lives.  Why should we spend taxpayer dollars to police the world yet not spend taxpayer dollars to save those within our own borders?  Either we shouldn't spend money to help others, or we should and if we should then we should definitely want to help those within our own borders before those who are not within our borders.

Stop being hawks

The right has become a group of hawks and this is contrary to conservative ideas on foreign policy.  Conservative ideas on foreign policy are as spelled out by the Cato Institute:

Cato's foreign policy vision is guided by the idea of our national defense and security strategy being appropriate for a constitutional republic, not an empire. Cato's foreign policy scholars question the presumption that an interventionist foreign policy enhances the security of Americans in the post-Cold War world, and maintain instead that interventionism has consequences, including the formation of countervailing alliances, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and even terrorism. The use of U.S. military force should be limited to those occasions when the territorial integrity, national sovereignty, or liberty of the United States is at risk.

Conservatives need to re-embrace those ideas.  They are the ideas that our nations founders had in mind, and they are the ideas that are the most ethical and that might also allow some on the left to consider the rest of our ideas.

Have a well thought out income tax policy

There either should not be an income tax as Libertarians would like, or there should be an income tax that works to support Conservative values.  A tax that is progressive helps strengthen families at the lower incomes and therefore helps literacy rates, etc. which helps to preserve conservative values of strong families, an educated populace, etc.  Right now the government has taken on far too much responsibility and therefore spends too much and our national debt is growing because of it.  It is time to start cutting back on spending, but at the same time increasing revenue and the only realistic way to increase revenue is through a progressive income tax because those in the middle and lower class cannot support any higher tax burden.

Start supporting alternative energy and embrace that global warming is real and might be caused by us

The science is in, global warming is real and it is probably caused by our actions (and can we afford to gamble that it is not?).  Most of the oil that is easily available is in countries with citizens that do not like us.  Because of these two things, it is long past time to start looking into energy sources that do not emit CO2, and that do not require us to work with countries that are not friendly to us.

Stop catering to Israel

We give far too much money and support to Israel and it hurts our credibilty around the world and doesn't help to reduce the hatred towards us in the Muslim world.  It is time to treat Israel as we would any other country that is a friend and ally of ours.  We should work with them, and be friends with them, but we should point out when they are doing something that works against peace in the middle east and use our monetary aid as a tool to help control their actions rather than blindly supporting them at all times.

Start rethinking drug policy

The war on drugs does not work, and will never work so long as it is punitive rather than based in medicine.  It only makes organized crime stronger, and leads to a larger role of government and often leads to violations of our constitutional rights.  The punitive war on drugs was originally based on racism, and is now based in morality that is derived from religion.  For these reasons, it is time for the federal government to take a non punitive role and start considering policy that would put organized crime out of business, make drug use safer and less damaging to society, and help those who are ready to reform their lives through cessation of drug abuse.

On politics and "Christianity"

I think you tie too much to "Christianity" here. What' you're really talking about, when you use that word, isn't really "Christianity" at all; it's a political sub-set that uses Christianity as a rationalization for reactionary and even fascist politics. The bad politics are the guiding principle in the equation, not the religion. For example, Jesus explicitly condemns those who make a show of praying in public, yet you won't find a hardcore denizen of the religious right who doesn't want to use the government to impose classroom prayers and religious practices on education. As another example, Christians are tasked with feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, etc., but you rarely find anyone on the religious right who doesn't want to gut any program intended to aid the needy. The religious right drags out the old condemnation of homosexuality from Levicticus and insist on strictly abiding by it, yet ignores all of the other practices condemned in that same section of the OT. And so on. Their politics come first. The religion is just a rationalization for it. That may seem like a small distinction, but it's an important one. Not all Christians deserve to be tarred with the brush with which the religious right had earned its tarring.

As to your larger points, conservatives would have a problem following your advice. Doing so would effectively cut away the entirety of the activist base of the Republican party--they wouldn't be able to poll out of single digits without it, and I imagine your words will go unheeded (probably even unread).

You couldn't be more wrong.

1st you sound like an anti-christian bigot.

2nd the "right" doesn't need to be accepted by the "mainstream" because it is mainstream.

3rd you are attempting to redefine "mainstream" as something that is really out in left field. For instance the majority of Americans believe in God, oppose abortion, do not want gov't run health care or health insurance, don't believe in global warming and even if they do they don't think dealing with it is important right now. The mainstream is not for Cap & TAX (or trade), and is not against Israel, but wants to win the war on terror.

4th you are trying to redefine "conservative ideology" as something that is not conservative at all.

5th your points aren't based on facts but rather leftist talking points (aka propaganda) with a few libertarian ideas thrown in. For example:

 * Palin & Huckabee have been very helpful in mobilizing conservative grassroots activism, and raising support for conservative candidates and causes. Far more so than any moderates or liberals you could name.

 * You obviously haven't listened to any talk radio other than NPR because Limbaugh & Hannity & the rest of conservative talk radio do not espouse hate or anger as you claim.

 * You either don't know enough about  Christianity or the founding of this country to be qualified to comment, or perhaps you're very insecure in your own lack of faith, thus you feel threatened by Christianity and compelled to attack or marginalize it somehow.

 * You are so uninformed by the leftist media you have no idea that Conservatives have been proposing all kinds of alternative solutions - they are not even welcomed to the debate. There has been no real debate. Probably because the left cannot debate without losing - it's ideas and policies have no rational basis other than narcissism. That's why liberalism is a mental disorder and it's also why the Obama administration and the Democrat party are always trying to ram their socialist clap-trap down America's throat without a debate, they know they can't win an honest debate that's why they admire the fascist dictators of the world.

 * You're completely wrong about being inconsistent. And you're wrong about why we oppose ObamaCare. First ObamaCare won't save any lives, it will however destroy the best healthcare system in the world. It will lead to rationing, which will lead to more people dying faster ,not fewer people dying slower. Second it makes no sense whatsoever to ruin and take away the health care coverage 85% of the US population who are happy with their coverage for the sake of the 15% who aren't. Let's have a debate about real reform - the Republicans have been begging for the chance to debate the issues - but the Dems won't have it. Third your argument is based on a false premise that it's good to spend taxpayer dollars to help people. That's not the job of the gov't to "help" people, that's what charities and churches are for. Your argument is inconsistent because you want God & Religion separated from Gov't presumably because you fear the imposition of Christian or religious ideas upon you, but you have no problem with the imposition of gov't health care or gay marriage, and/or the taking of taxpayer dollars to "help people", fund abortions, and so on. The left claims it wants gov't to help people, but it doesn't help people - the policies of the left hurt people, countless more people have been killed, countless more died needlessly because of the policies of the left. Leftist ideas do not empower people, they enslave them.

 * The science is definitely not in as you say. Man-made global warming is a complete hoax. There has been no warming for over decade. Thousands of scientists have rebuked the claims of Al Gore and company. But even if you were right - why won't the left embrace clean coal, or nuclear energy? Because the left is not sincere - the whole green movement is not about the environment or saving the planet it's about undermining capitalism.

 * Stop catering to Isreal who is our friend and ally and start catering to Islamic extremists who are our enemies and want to wipe Isreal off the map and also want to destroy us ?!? Again your argument is living proof that liberalism is a mental disorder. Are you aware that for every concession Isreal has made for peace in the MIddle East they have been met with more violence? Literally thousands of rockets raining down on neighborhoods, schools, hospitals, shopping centers, not to mention the suicide bombings and terror? It is the Islamic nations of the world who are constantly opposing the peace process, they are they aggressors and people like you are fools who know nothing of facts of history, of the real world today, or anything about which you speak.

Finally your last point explains where you're coming from, if you're not a pothead or medicated druggie yourself, you're obviously getting all your silly talking points from somebody who followed Timothy Leary. While an argument can be made from a libertarian point of view and some conservatives would probably agree about the merits of decriminalizing drugs - it's the recreational and habitual use of drugs and mis-use of prescription meds that keeps people from thinking clearly and independently, and deprives them not only of their personal freedom and robs them of their potential, it destroys their lives and it makes them dependent on others instead of themselves and makes those around them suffer miserably. People on drugs are not in control of their own destinies, they are more easily controlled, they are not really free. People on drugs are more apt to believe lies, lies that the drugs are somehow helping and not hurting them, but they also are more apt to believe lies about health care, global warming, and other nonsense.

There is still hope for you however, because you still have some common sense about taxes. Eliminating all income taxes is a great idea. That is why many conservatives support the FairTax. Because you favor lower taxes particularly income taxes, you betray the inner capitalist inside of you. I assume you work hard for your money and you would like to keep more of it. You're rightly offended by the notion that the gov't should be able to take away from you what you have earned and that your money might be spent in ways that you'd rather not spend it. Surely you believe in the Constitutional rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, but if you were at all logically consistent or principled, you would then have to take a more conservative stance then on health care, on abortion, on energy independence, on the rest of Obama's freedom restricting, taxing and spending like a madman on steroids agenda, and on foreign policy, you'd have to become more conservative like gasp, Limbaugh and Hannity, or God-forbid Michael Savage.

wow

Your post is typical of what I've observed of your work here so far, which is to say a waste of space in which any genuine insight is entirely accidental. You say liberals are mentally deranged creatures who try to enslave people in the same post as you deny conservatives deal in hate and anger, and probably genuinely don't even see the problem with that. I don't care about most of this, but you begin, in a manner typical of the problematic conservatives of our time, with a great deal of misinformation, and I thought I'd at least set the record straight on a little of that. To wit:

you are attempting to redefine "mainstream" as something that is really out in left field. For instance the majority of Americans believe in God, oppose abortion, do not want gov't run health care or health insurance, don't believe in global warming and even if they do they don't think dealing with it is important right now

Most Americans do, indeed, believe in some god, but that doesn't put them in the camp of the religious right, which is a nut fringe movement.

It's flatly false that "the majority of Americans" oppose abortion. The U.S. has been majority pro-choice for literally decades, and, with minor variances (sometime short term gains by the pro-choice side), the numbers have remained unchanged in all that time. It's a phenomenon pollsters talk about, in and of itself.

It's also flatly false that Americans don't want government health insurance--support for single-payer--a proposal further to the left than anything on the table at present--has been around 60% for years, now.

The polling on global warming has shown huge majorities (over 60%) concerned about the problem for the last 11 years (and probably further back--that's the info I was able to track down with a Google search). The number, as measured in May by Gallup, had dropped from the year before (down to 57%), but it has briefly gone down before, and the long-term polling is very clear on the point.

It is, in fact, hard to find any major issue on which the right holds a majority, much less any sort of considerable majority. The conservatives are not "the mainstream."

mark_j, Very close to what I

 mark_j,

Very close to what I would have said. I agree 99%.

I would suggest to gain more revenue is to find ways to create jobs that won't go overseas. That may be energy independence or something else. We cannot keep going on sending jobs overseas, sending our money to Iraq, and neglect the infrastructure. Sadly, republicans only give tax cuts and it seems to be laissez-faire thereafter and the lower 20% or 30% of the population never benefits.

A few comments

First, the claim that "there are no death panels" would be easier to believe if other leftists weren't saying that Republicans/insurers invented them and if yet other leftists weren't saying that we need them.

Second, abortion is one of the few issues in which public opinion is turning right. It might make sense to emphasize it.

Third, I don't see why global warming is a political issue at all. If it turns out to be a crisis, we can handle it by increasing use of nuclear energy and burying more carbon. The latter, of course, requires restricting recycling. In other words, if GW is a crisis we should ignore everything environmentalist wackos are saying and if it isn't a crisis we should ignore everything environmentalist wackos are saying.

 The problem is that abortion

The problem is that abortion is non economic and has no business in government. The best scenario is to leave it to the states. After all, we are supposed to have federalism.

On global warming, we should be aware of it and work to coming up with solutions. We do not have to panic with the far left, but we also should not ignore it as the far right does.
