OH-02: EMILY's List Endorses Wulsin

In a not-so-shocking development, EMILY's List has endorsed Vic Wulsin in OH-02. But try finding that announcement on Vic Wulsin's campaign site. Why would Wulsin want to bury this news? Because while Wulsin's values are aligned with EMILY's List, the district does not support their principles. Wulsin will take their campaign cash and support while trying very hard to keep it secret. Let's not forget what EMILY's List is all about...

A candidate must meet three qualifications to be considered for an EMILY’s List endorsement: back abortion rights, including the right to late-term (or ‘partial birth’) abortions; be a Democrat; and, in primary elections, be a woman.

We can have arguments over how much the demographics of the district have changed, but I would find it very difficult to believe that this is the sort of group that the good people of OH-02 would support. And that is why Team Wulsin hides the endorsement. Despite the obvious risks of being associated with a radical group that wants to REINSTATE partial-birth abortion, Vic Wulsin has apparently decided that taking their money is worth the risk. EMILY's List DOES support the reinstatement of partial-birth abortion, though it hasn't been brain-dead enough to issue such a direct pronouncement; however, its reaction to the Supreme Court's upholding of the Federal Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act in April 2007 gives it away:

"This is a call to arms," said Ellen Moran, executive director of Emily's List, a Washington group that supports Hillary Clinton for president and raises money for Democratic women who back abortion rights. "You're going to see women become more politically active, make more contributions and really stand up and say, 'enough already.'"

This is the radical agenda that Vic Wulsin represents.

Fortunately, Rep. Jean Schmidt is a genuine pro-life fighter.  But, Jean could use your help.

Wulsin

This is my home district.  Wulsin also ran in 2006 and I was shocked when she came within about 1% point of beating incumbent and solid conservative Jean Schmidt.  She is quite far left, as the EMILY endorsement helps signify.  The article I linked suggests health care is her main issue.  Her mantra is very typically socialist here, government must pay for everything:

"My mother has to pay a co-pay for physical therapy, and I ask her, 'Are you going?' and she thinks about skipping it because of the cost. There's tremendous insecurity, even among people with insurance."

Until everything is free and copays are eliminated for all, they will never stop.  As a physician who actually sees patients, as opposed to Vic (who isn't running as Victoria anymore) Wulsin, an epidemiologist, this type of sentiment is disheartening.  I'm becoming more convinced that we will end up with national healthcare eventually.  Imagine the logic with your car-I decided not to get the oil changed cause it cost 30 bucks and my car insurance didn't cover it.  Oops.

If this is any foreboding of things to come in November, OH-2, Ohio in general, and therefore the presidency are in big trouble.  As the article mentions, it's a bit hard to take that data seriously, with 46% being undecided or for the independent candidate.  But a Wulsin victory would sure seem to be a surrogate for a move left of much of Cincinnati and a vote for Obama, which would be crushing.

Schmidt is an electoral underachiever

Even a mediocre campaigner ought to be holding this seat by 7-9 points even in bad years. I don;t know the precise reason but it's obvious some statistically significant number of right of center voters are choosing not to keep Schmidt in office.

Brinkman and the COASTers

(Soon to be former...) State Rep. Tom Brinkman and COAST (Google these characters if you aren't familiar with them and their antics) contributes to a lot of the unstable nature of OH-02.  They claim that one vote in the state legislature means that Jean Schmidt is unfit to represent the district in Congress.  There is no reasoning with these people...they are completely crazy.  I've tried to get them to show me what in her Congressional record is unacceptable and unforgiveable; I get nowhere...  And since there hasn't been a strong party leader in any of these counties, there isn't much of a bench either...
