Troopergate Investigation Tainted, Impossible for Palin to Get a Fair Hearing
The details of the alleged "Troopergate Scandal" are now well known. While Gov. Sarah Palin says that she fired former Commissioner of Public Safety, Walt Monegan, because of insubordination on budget issues as well as other differences on the direction of the public safety agenda in Alaska, many have contended that Palin let Monegan go because he refused to fire a state trooper who happened to be the ex-husband of Palin's sister. (The Anchorage Daily News has set up a timeline of stories related to Troopergate.)
I've been following this story since July. And while I'm not one to judge this investigation, I have a great deal of respect for both Gov. Palin and Walt Monegan, a person who has been in law enforcement for over three decades and is well respected within the public safety community. This investigation needs to happen and the facts need to be brought out to light because serious allegations against Gov. Palin's staff have been made. But Palin's selection as Sen. McCain's VP nominee has accelerated and catalyzed excessive partisanship that has tainted this serious investigation, and has made it impossible for Gov. Palin's administration to get a fair hearing. I decided to do a little investigating of my own.
Democratic State Senate Judiciary Chair, Hollis French, Has Pre-Judged This Investigation and Predicted Its Outcome:
In late July, the Alaska State Legislature's Legislative Council, a group of lawmakers that handles the legislature's business when it is out of session, approved a $100,000 contract to hire an investigator. The Council, chaired by Sen. Kim Elton of Juneau (D), appointed Sen. Hollis French of Anchorage (D), the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to oversee the investigation. [SIDENOTE: If you're asking how two Democrats got high-level chairmanships in a Republican controlled State Senate, here's the answer. 6 of the 11 Republicans decided to join with the 9 Democrats to form a bipartisan coalition. There's a GOP President of the Senate, but the majority leader and the chairmen of many committees are Democrats.]
French, long-known to have ambitions for statewide office, has made several statements that have pre-judged the outcome of this investigation. In an ABC news story a couple weeks ago, French said this as-yet-unwritten and uninvestigated report is "likely to be damaging to the Governor's administration" and that Gov. Palin "has a credibility problem." French even had this to say about the investigation's impact on the election:
"French says the McCain campaign failed to contact any of the Senators involved in the investigation during the vetting process of Gov. Palin. 'If they had done their job, they never would have picked her,' said French. 'Now they may have to deal with an October surprise,' he said, referring to the scheduled release Oct. 31 of the committee's final report."
"The report is a preliminary step prior to any effort to impeach the Governor, said French."
October surprise? Impeachment? Really? Now we know that this investigation has turned into a partisan effort to smear Gov. Palin. It's not surprising because Hollis French has publicly supported and endorsed Barack Obama, as has Kim Elton.
The Special Council Hired to Investigate Palin, Steve Branchflower, Has Relationships That Taint the Investigation:
Steve Branchflower was hired as the special council to investigate Sarah Palin on August 1. In an August 2, 2008 Anchorage Daily News article, Legislative Council chairman, Kim Elton, said that Branchflower asked for the job, along with several others, which makes this hiring a little fishy. Branchflower's wife, Linda, worked for Monegan as a detective and publicly praised him as a "respected supervisor because he listens to his employees and isn't afraid to change course if something isn't working out" in a 2001 Anchorage Daily News article. Monegan is an honorable cop, but this relationship makes the Branchflower hiring even fishier.
Furthermore, Branchflower and Hollis French are former colleagues. According to the same August 2, 2008 story:
"French will supervise Branchflower. French, also a former prosecutor and colleague of Branchflower, has told the council that the investigator will go to work gathering evidence and could come back to lawmakers if 'some people just won't talk.' The House and Senate Judiciary Committees could then issues subpoenas to compel testimony."
All of these close relationships are a little too close for comfort. But there's more ... the Obama campaign gets involved ...
The Obama Campaign Contacted the PSEA Union
CNN reported on September 5 on "Election Center" that the Obama campaign contacted the union (PSEA) representing Trooper Wooten, the same union that blasted Gov. Palin for firing Monegan.
DREW GRIFFIN: Campbell, what we're learning is this was a very bitter, ugly family divorce. Blown into a statewide scandal here. And now blowing up in the media feeding frenzy of Presidential politics. Trooper Mike Wooten says he has been offered $30,000 from a tabloid to tell his story. The Obama campaign has contacted his union."
Why did the Obama campaign contact this union? So, not only have French's statements and Branchflower's relationships tainted this investigation. What's clear is that the Obama campaign has inserted more partisan politics into what's supposed to be a nonpartisan investigation.
Today, five lawmakers as well as a group of citizens filed lawsuits to stop the investigation. I wouldn't go that far. I still believe that this is an investigation worth having, because on face, there might have been some improper behavior within the administration that Palin had no knowledge of. But now, the investigation should resume after the election when partisan politics won't become a problem.

It's Going To Once Again Blow Up In Obama's Face
The fired trooper in question has admitted to using a stun gun to discipline a 10 year old child. I hope the Obama camp makes this a campaign issue, that the Governor wanted a state trooper removed because of this, and his other numerous offenses, like drinking on the job.
"Rope a dope - round 2"
I am sure that the McCain campaign knew that the allegations were false. They were hoping that the Obama campaign, aided by their willing accomplices in the mainstream media would follow. Now that both have done exactly that, when she is vindicated, the Obama campaign will look vengeful and stupid in going after a successful woman (again). Congratulations on a thorough report, Matt Moon.
Might I suggest jujitsu
Sarah should demand to be interviewed by this committee.
In public. With live TV coverage.
Think Ollie North
We'll see if they have the "pair" they claim to have
Troopergate
Partisan? The committee was made up of both GOp and Dems and voted 12-0 to investigate.
I don't care if the trooper tasered anybody. That is a criminal matter and should be handled as an internal personnel matter.
The record is clear: Palin sent her family, her husband, and other surrogates around to influence the leadership of the Alaska State Troopers because she wanted to pursue a personal family vendetta.
That is unseemly, and probably illegal, and the results of the investigation are needed NOW, before this abusive, vindictive public official gets to one heartbeat from the Oval Office.
JD, do the cops in your state drink on the job?
Could you explain why this guy shouldn;t have been fired? One reason will suffice
Troopergate
it will make no difference who is guilty or innocent. We all know the trooper is a loser big time and no one will care in the end. If this is all the Obama campaign has they had better give up now and shorten the agony.
Hardly...
Palin has an ethical complaint against her, and that needs to be investigated. The alternative is for the investigation to wait until after the election, which is hardly in the best interests of the American people who need to make an informed judgement.
It is unsurprising that the Obama campaign has contacted the union. What is wrong with that? Dems & the unions are best buddies. Contacting the union is a natural way of performing opposition research. It's like McCain contacting a bank over an alleged issue with Biden. Would they do it? Or course.
Furthermore, in this toxic policitical environment, how on earth do you expect to have a nonpartisan investigation? If the findings are in favor of Palin, the Dems will claim cover up. If the findings are against Palin, the GOP will claim that the investigation was improper, tainted, etc. (as in fact you do already).
The fact that the GOP are crying wolf already about this suggests that there is something to this story, which means the blame lies squarely at the feet of McCain for taking such a risk with his VP choice (in fact, numerous posts I read before the pick stated that Palin was no longer on the table due to this ethics investigation - it seems they were right and McCain was wrong)
nothing there
Palin has an ethical complaint against her, and that needs to be investigated.
This has already been proven to be a big heap of nothing, due to the facts alrady out there. Governor Sarah Palin excercised her authority as governor and removed someone from a position that she had every right to do. The evidence is out there already that prove this was nothing.
Charlie Rangel is a self-admitted tax cheat for 20 years. that needs to be considered, investigated, and for the sake of the nation put on the media channels at least 10 times more than this story, since it is 10 times more serious. After all, Charlie is writing our tax law. I question the bis of the MSM that they let Rangel (D- NY) off the hook.
Furthermore, in this toxic policitical environment, how on earth do you expect to have a nonpartisan investigation?
Good question, but that's why Obama activists should be recused from the investigation.
The fact that the GOP are crying wolf already about this suggests that there is something to this story,
I see, the old Foley gambit ("the seriousness of the charges make them worth investigating no matter how absurd")... the fact that Obama was distressed by Corsi's "Obama Nation" book suggests that it is very much on target, which means the fault lies with Obama for running for President despite having the kind of past (drug use, work with marxists and terrorists, 20 years in a Black Liberation Theology/black panther type church) that would make him unfit to be President.
The real story is this: The anti-Palin liberals in the Obama camp and media are so desperate for a negative story that they latch on to things even if they are not true.
One reason
Whether that particular trooper was drunk or not, tasered or not, should be the subject of an inquiry and fact finding by his commander. Not by the Press. I would have no problem whatsoever with his being disciplined, and/or dismissed, and/or had criminal charges filed as a result of that investigation. It happens every day in law enforcement.
And especially - not - by the Governor, who had a personal interest and vendetta anyone could see, and should have stayed as far away from this as possible.
It should be clear to anyone who cares and is not blinded by partisanship that, at the very least, this is a ridiculous failure of judgment. At heart, it is an abuse of power, and a sure sign of her governing style.
I have had just about all I can take of Richard Edward Cheney: Sarah Palin seems to be his mini-me.
If a commander fails to discipline his staff
he is subject to dismissal himself.
What's so hard to figure out here?
Tasergate
Rush was urging people to start referring to this little "scandal" as Tasergate. Sounds good to me.
All Palin Needs To Do
All Palin needs to do is ask Obama "If you knew what I did about this state trooper (using a taser on a 10 year old child for discipline, drinking alcohol on the job, etc.) would you have kept him on as a law enforcement officer? Or would you have been proactive in making sure he was removed?
The main argument for this "scandal" is that because Palin had a family connection, she should have looked the other way, and not interfered. In which case, she would probably be criticized for "covering" for her brother-in-law.
Please Obama, come and get it.
Not to mention that bastard theatened to put a bullet in Sarah
Palin's father in he helped her sister get a divorce lawyer when overheard their conversation following the taser incident. This guy has also illegaly killed a moose ( he claims it was rabid but no evidence has emrged to support that claim). He has been accused of being DUI while driving his cruiser on the job. And illegally tampering with an investigation of his girlfriend who is likewise facing DUI charges.
This little fascist thug should not be allowed to carry a badge but thanks to the police union they will protect his sorry ass at the expense of the people of Alaska.
Ooooh, he shot a moose!
Couple facts you fellas are managing to conveniently avoid:
-All of the trooper's wrongdoings happened in 2005.
-He *was* disciplined by his commanding officer.
-Palin was advised multiple times, including by a judge, that she was overstepping the line with her personal vendetta.
And let's be clear, vendetta is the right word for it. This is part of a disturbing pattern in her governance, like appointing a high school friend as the head of the agriculture dept because of a "childhood love of cows." This trooper is clearly a dick, no one doubts that. But three years after the divorce, and after numerous warnings from her advisors, she still was attempting to get him punished further. You're either a friend of Palin, and rewarded well above your pay grade, or your an enemy of Palin and she cuts you down at the knees. Troopergate isn't about the trooper. It's about abuse of power and firing competent civil servants for not doing your bidding. We've had eight years of that, and it gave us "heckuva job Brownie," the Attorney General's office, and the latest Interior Department debacle. It turns out running the government is challenging, and being personal buds with the executive doesn't make someone qualified.
If y'all think there's no fire under all this smoke, you're spending waaaaay too much time in your own echo chamber.
Your lies and smears only discredit yourself
There was and is no vendetta. that is a fiction created by the anti-palin left.
" It's about abuse of power and firing competent civil servants for not doing your bidding. "
Wrong. The fact that the trooper is still on the job kind of says it all. This is nothing like what happened with the Clinton Travel office.
"It's about abuse of power and firing competent civil servants for not doing your bidding." - There is by definition no abuse when someone serves 'at will' and the very public disagreements over the budget, the real reasons for moving him aside, have been backed up by evidence. Your allegation is fiction, and its a false presumption that Palin didnt have the right to act as governor. Well, she IS the governor and so she has the right to hire and fire certain people at will, no questions asked. No abuse of power, proper use of authority given by the people.
This 'story' is a fiction that the anti-Palin left and the Obamedia have latched on. They kept throwing stuff at the wall to see what would stick. The lies and smears only discredit those like you telling them.
So why
So why exactly did the state legislature vote 14-0 to launch an independent investigation? Why did a Republican-dominated committee vote to issue subpoenas last week? Uh-ohs... sounds like reality doesn't conform with your worldview. Or maybe the entire Alaska legislature was pro-Obama back in July. Yeah, that's it. Definitely.
Also, "Obamedia?" How's that tin-foil hat fitting ya? Snugly, right? Yeah, I'll be it's snug.
BTW, are you sure he's a political appointee? I haven't heard that anywhere except from you. Seems like the Republicans would've gotten that one out there in official talking points if it was actually the case.
Question to J. Dandy
Will Obama pay price for dishonorable attacks?
I agree with you on the trooper, this should have been dealt with on the "local" level.
He was a state trooper, and his case was dealt with with by the Dept he works for. What should have happened did happen, with the sole exception that in most states he would have been fired for the things he did and in this case he got off easy.
You might want reseach the part about the trooper and Walt agreeing with Gov. Palin
No, they wouldnt want to step on the story. Keep it alive. This story is the MORAL EQUIVALENT OF DAN RATHER FAKED MEMO SMEAR.
Honesty, this can hurt Obama indirectly and I don’t want him losing to something like this, I want him to lose on his issues, not something stupid that his campaign did. The ridiculous failure of judgment will be on Obama
Obama is a dirty, creepy, roll-in-mud campaigner. We didn't know that when he was giving his kumbaya speeches way back when, but he and his campaign have consistently been willing to lie and distort Mccain (100 year war lie, distorting his comment on economy, plying the phony mcBush theme, his smear on mccain cant email, etc) and the Republicans, and engage in personal put-downs (old fish). And then Obama adds insult to injury by accusing McCain of getting in the mud. what a hypocrite!
I am more than happy to see Obama go down in flames over this smear. Obama had the choice of running a honorable or dishonorabl campaign. He long ago chose the dishonorable route - anything for power.
Obama and his issues
troopergate
I've been trying..., no demanding, of CBS, ABC, Newsmax, etc., etc. that they include the Obama connection in stories about this matter. ABC in particular has run story after story on the Brian Ross site without mentioning a word. Ross and ABC are unabashedly in the tank for Barack.
Troopergate is scandalous and the MSM will never cover it honestly as long as it reflects badly on Obama. There's the rub! The media feeding frenzy on Palin endeared her to voters. Now, however, they will just slant the ordinary coverage day after day and wear McCain Palin down. The GOP needs a well funded 527 to focus on the media attempt to steal this election and the focus needs to be relentless.
I spent the better part of my adult life in politics and my observation was that the Dems don't know how to govern and the Reps don't know how to politic. The McCain campaign has done pretty well so far, but the swell is all for Palin. However out of favor with the public the MSM appears now, they will kill the Reps in the long run unless they are thoroughly discredited and are forced to defend themselves -- by name.
Political Appointees serve at the pleasure of their patron
Political Appointees serve at the pleasure of their patron.
The Commissioner of Public Safety was appointed by the Gov. and could be let go when ever she wanted.
The Republicans NEED to use this.
What better way to kill the Employee Free Choice Act than to play up the dangerous grip that big labor and its allies hold on the state government in Juneau?
hold any government servent accountable.
Refusing to comply with a subpoena is illegal, and frankly, not the best way to assert innocence. Public representitives need to be held accountable for there actions. I know that we all believe this. It would be extremely politicised, but I don't care, abusing power should get attention. What is the problem with knowing if she did something dispicable before the election. That way the American people can make a better choice. We should be concerned not just about ellecting our guys, but concerned that our guys are going to take our orders. Republican or Democrat, I would like to know if they abused power. That matters to me, I'm not blind to it inside my parties boundries...
