What the McCain campaign should be putting out
Submitted by Mike Warren on Thu, 08/07/2008 - 15:42
Cross-posted from last Friday at Right-Wing Vitriol. Makes sense to post it with all this ad talk going on.
Happy Friday, everyone. Katherine and I (okay, I just helped a little on the side) put together this ad based on an idea from my boss at the Washington Examiner, Barbara Hollingsworth. If John McCain put this ad out from now until November, Barack Obama wouldn't stand a chance. Feast your eyes:

I didn't post this in the original post, but I figured I might explain WHY this would be effective for McCain.
The best course of action for McCain is to stress his personal character. It isn't McCain's style, so perhaps surrogates will have to do it for him. The point is that this type of ad attacks Obama where he is weakest, not where he is strongest, like with Celeb (which I still thought was an effective ad).
This ad basically says "John McCain can withstand the pressure. We don't know if Barack Obama can" with just pictures, music, and a few words. The fact that it comes in under 30 seconds means it makes this point quickly and succinctly. I think with a little touch-ups from a professional, an ad in this mold could make the sell in the midwest and more rural regions where Obama is weak.
COUNTRY FIRST
Good points, but he's done bio ads. Two words missing that would make it even better, "Country First". I like seeing this already in McCain ads, and I hope they make it McCain's signature slogan. COUNTRY FIRST goes to the core of why Obama is not right in so many ways - the service gap, the "whos a better CinC" question, and voting for President v party (appeal to crossover Dems), and a subtle "what has obama ever done for the country?" ...
He's got it ... again ... in an ad that touts Democrat praises of him and undercuts the "HE's Cheney McBush!" attack from the Obama camp.
Frankly, I find this a lot more effective than what is IMHO a big mistake - trying to seperate from Bush by criticizing Bush, that plays into Obama's hands. (On that point, if Obama keeps trying to tie him to Bush or demand an explanation of why he agreed with Bush on XYZ, McCain needs to simply say "I have worked with others when we were in agreement and I opposed others when we had genuine disagreement. I have worked with the Reagan, Clinton and two Bush administrations and tried to put our country first at all times. My record speaks for itself. My opponent has no record to speak about." and then add: "I think we should be talking about the future, not the past. ")
