Not the Conservatives I Know

Thomas Sowell advances the narrative that a slew of conservatives are throwing their support to Barack Obama.  Is he serious, or is this a twisted form of reverse psychology to fire up the conservative base?

A number of friends of mine have commented on an odd phenomenon that they have observed-- conservative Republicans they know who are saying that they are going to vote for Barack Obama. It seemed at first to be an isolated fluke, perhaps signifying only that my friends know some strange conservatives. But apparently columnist Robert Novak has encountered the same phenomenon and has coined the term "Obamacons" to describe the conservatives for Senator Obama.

Who are these conservatives?  Republicans or those who have voted Republican in the past? Maybe. But conservatives who believe in more freedom and power for the people and less for the government? I can't fathom it.

Admittedly, I have friends who are uncertain about voting for the Republican nominee this year, but I don't envision them voting for Barack Obama, and in effect, endorsing the greatest expansion of government since FDR.

A great orator Obama certainly is.  A symbol of how much our nation has advanced since only white, men with land could vote?  Yes!  I would also argue he's probably a better actor than Ronald Reagan ever was, even as "the Gipper."  I admire all of those qualities in a presidential candidate.

But a friend of conservatism?

Not.

Those who voted for George W. Bush...

Four years ago, essentially apptroved of the largest expansions in government since probably the Nixon or LBJ years. The problem is that Kerry and Gore both wanted to expand government even more. This year, voters have a choice between McCain who wants to make the government bigger, and Barack Obama, who does not think that McCain will go far enough.

True Conservatism

They're obviously not conservatives if they're voting Obama. The real question is, are you a real conservative if you even vote for McCain? He obviously is too moderate for a true conservative, but do we forsake our principles by voting for him?

Unfortunately, I find myself in the same boat as Ann Coulter: The only way I'd vote for McCain is if Mitt Romney was his VP.

Obamacons are the true conservatives.

Obamacons are fully aware of the detrimental effect their support of Obama will have on this Republic. It is nothing, however, compared to the detrimental effects conservatives have suffered from their support of  pro-government growth Republicans for the last six elections.  It is also nothing compared to the detrimental effects yet another six election of liberal Republicanism will have on the Republic by supporting yet more Progressive Republicans.  Whereby the politically humane thing to do is to create a "learning experience" in the minds of the voting public as quickly as possible by bringing to power a radical, socialist liberal.

All that remains is to reform the Republican Party to actually take advantage of the Internet and by 2010, we can capture Congress.  By limiting Republican primaries to registered Republicans, only, we can take back the government by the 2012 election.
