Sanford Should Resign

[Since Patrick has turned off the comments section on his entry, I'm responding to him here.]
Imagine that a Democratic Governor doing all this: going AWOL for six days, leaving the country without informing his staff or the Lt. Gov., having driven to the airport in a neighboring state in a state-owned vehicle, having travelled to a country where kidnap-for-hire is common and having NOT checked in with embassy, causing his staff to issue lies about his whereabouts, and then lying himself to a reporter who spotted him on his return to the airport.
He's toast even before you add in the parts about the sex and the possibility that he traveled on the taxpayer's dime.

You're kidding, right?
A Democrat who did this would hardly even be tarnished.
How long did William Jefferson hold his seat? Blago? Burris? Kennedy?
uhhh....
this is the deal. Everyone is arguing about the different treatment Dems or GOPers get from the public when it comes to infedelity. This is not the point! If you are taxpayer - infidelity should not be your beef with Sanford.
The point is that Sanford, a public servant, paid by taxpayers and beholden to the people of South Carolina, disappeared and then lied about where he was. This was doubly stupid because apparently he didn't have to lie because his wife apparently knew he was cheating on her anyway. I just think Sanford handled this very poorly and its his own fault. Its not the fault of anyone except him. This would not even be a big news story (see John Edwards), if Sanford wasn't so shady about the whole thing. Democrat or Republican, this kind of action on the part of a governor is unacceptable. Just like if I disappeared to Argentina and didn't tell anyone where I was, I would be fired. Lets keep the focus here because this is a losers argument for Sanford supporters and arguing public treatment of infidelity based on party affiliation sounds like a desperate attempt to avoid the crux of the issue.
Exactly right.
The infidelity is between him and his wife. Any voter offended by his hypocrisy or perceived moral failing can vote their conscience, but IMHO the infidelity in itself doesn't justify calls for resignation.
The truly public issues here are the lack of judgment and responsibility he displayed in the performance of his official duties, the duties that South Carolinians entrusted him with and pay him to perform. For those derelictions, he should resign. I'd never vote for him for a national office because his own behavior demonstrated that he lacks the judgment and character to be trusted with public office.
