Apparently "Advisor to the McCain Campaign" isn't enough of a clue

"To go forward, GOP must snap out of its Sarah Palin spell" (link) is the latest from GOP consultant Mike Murphy. You don't have to be a Palin supporter to realize that he's attempting to put a smiley face on the gross incompetence of the campaign he worked for.

For instance, he says that independents ran away from Palin a few weeks after her selection. What he fails to note is that the smears of her began within a week after she'd been selected, and the McCain campaign - aside from some posturing against the NYT - had little or no response. Of course, the bloggers weren't any better, either failing to push back against those smears or doing it in an ineffective way.

In fact, my posts about smears against Sarah Palin might have had more of an impact against those lies than the McCain campaign and bloggers combined. And, great as I think I am, that's not such a good thing.

Mike Murphy declined to work for the McCain campaign last summer. He served as a political analyst for NBC News throughout the election.

Was the rest of the post just an excuse to make the highly debatable claim that your site, which received about 167 hits a day in August (per your sitemeter), had an impact on the 2008 campaign?  Those must be 334 very, very influential eyeballs.

1. Your figures are off.

2. The point was that the pushback against the smears was so weak that even a backwater site like mine might have had more of an impact. Please list some examples of highly successful pushbacks.

You saw major conservative figures like Murphy, Noonan et. al, repulsed by her. This is where moderates like G Will count. A shill like Hannity will whip up the faithfull but the moderates sway other moderates. The MSM doesn't pay attention to Limbaugh, but they do probably read the major (moderate) conservatives as a barometer of what they consider the important parts of that segment. 

They (moderate reps) don't necessarily agree with the media treatment she's had, but that doesn't mean they're going to spend their credibility defending her. You had Dana Parino the other night sympathize with her on Hannity, but at the same time said she should get the hell out of the camera eye. Camera crews may follow her down to the river, but they're not making her talk to them.

Some smears started two days after her selection, but indies might have run away after people started knowing who she was. It didn't take her long to sound stupid.

He tried getting an Al D'Amato clone to run as the second coming of John McCain and led him to one of the worst defeats in NYS history.  Ever since then I've stopped drinking the Mike Murphy Kool-Aid
