Smart and effective ways to block Sotomayor

[UPDATE: The below is obviously too much to ask for those who've already capitulated. However, let's bargain: will even those who want to lose try to help get a concession of some kind out of her? For instance, it would not be impossible to get her to renounce the NCLR. And, that would help blunt the impact they have in general and might prevent her from doing what they want should she be confirmed. Deal?]

If many of Sonia Sotomayor's online opponents concentrated on opposing her in effective ways, she might not be confirmed. At the very least, that opposition would deal a blow to the Obama administration and the MSM. If her approval ratings drop low enough - or some new information on her is discovered - she might be forced to withdraw. At the very least, fighting her nomination in the correct way can be used to push back against the Obama administration and groups linked to it.

Here's how to do it:

 1. Find someone to put together one comprehensive, accessible, fully-sourced list of the reasons to oppose her. The audience should be the general public, not just lawyers. All the legal arguments against her need to be there, but that needs to be put into footnotes. The main portion should concentrate on "wise Latina", an accessible summary of Ricci, her involvement with the two far-left racial power groups, and so on. And, it would be a huge mistake for that list to only be of interest to conservatives. It should point out why anyone who's not far-left should oppose her. Sending around a link from the Heritage Foundation or similar will probably be rejected by many; it needs to be from a non-partisan group. And, it needs to be organized in such a fashion that it's not rejected immediately by many: unnecessary details need to be put into footnotes. And, obviously, it needs to be completely truthful, and arguments others might raise with the article need to be taken into account and rolled into the article.

2. A key part of the opposition to her should be her membership in the National Council of La Raza, a group that gave an award to someone who'd proposed genocide years earlier. See my completely fact-based coverage of that and their many other issues at that link. Note that it's very important to tell only the truth about that group: confusing them with other groups with similar names or misleading about what they support actually serves their interests.

3. Another key part of the opposition to her should be the fact that she was on the board of the PRLDEF. Someone with a wide audience needs to organize a coordinated group effort to do research into her past activities with that group. Most of that research will have to be done in person at offline archives at colleges and the like in NYC.

4. You need to send links about her to all your friends, and urge them to send them on to their friends. Post about her to forums, mailing lists, and the like. Everyone should be encouraged to contact as many national politicians as possible stating their opposition to her confirmation. Until such time as the comprehensive summary is available, you'll need to send a series of links.

5. Those who have websites should attempt to discredit her supporters who lie or mislead about her. Actually trying to discredit MSM reporters and the like is a very powerful tool, but it's one that many don't use or do so in a largely ineffective way. For how to do that effectively, see this. Two recent articles that could be discussed are this and this. You need to show those who might otherwise believe them why they're wrong. If you don't have a website, that can also be done by leaving comments on news and blog entries presenting a fact-based argument why the reporter or blogger is wrong. Concentrate on discrediting the reporter or blogger and try to avoid getting into useless arguments with other commenters, especially those who are sockpuppets. And, posting the 100th comment about this situation in an online echo chamber is a waste of everyone's time. Consider spending that time on something actually effective.

6. Being realistic is a good thing, and not everyone is in a position where they can go to the wall in their opposition to her. However, some people who are in a position to oppose her are instead sounding like Tokyo Rose. Let them know you'll be holding them accountable for what she does on the court. In some cases, call them out publicly by name. If someone buys into the NCLR's spin that all Hispanics think alike, point out to them how they're wrong. That isn't difficult to do, it's just that few people try to do it.

If her online opponents put some work into this using the points above, she might not be confirmed. Please send the link to this post to others and urge them to get involved.

be careful what you wish for

If the GOP was able to somehow block Sotomayor (which is <1%), I'm pretty sure that Obama will nominate a more liberal replacement.

So,

you mean he'd nominate someone even easier to oppose?

it doesn't work that way

If the GOP is shrill on every nominee, they lose credibility. It's all about picking their battles.

Sotomayor was a lot more moderate than other nominees that could have been selected. The GOP should have accepted the gift and saved their vitriole for a hard liberal nominee later on. After all, if they give Sotomayor a pass, then their criticisms on the next nominee will carry more weight.

But what has happened is just the opposite. The GOP went shrill with cries of reverse racism on a fairly moderate candidate that almost everyone agrees is fully qualified. In addition, her nomination is all but guaranteed!

What the GOP is doing right now is nothing short of an epic fail. They are firing all of their ammo at a target they can't take down. They are essentially crying wolf at a poodle, so fewer people will take them seriously next time.

Sometimes I wonder if the GOP is that dumb, or if Obama & Rahm are just adeptly playing them for fools.

I don't think 'they' are that dumb, but certianly parts.

Listening to the confirmation yesturday, Hatch  and Grahm pretty much said she was getting confirmed. One thing I think was smart was the number of times Reps referenced Obama's comments. Too the point one had to wonder who was being confirmed. Since few normal people listen to these things end to end, those sound bites work well for the media. SS will be confirmed, but put Obama's credibility in question.

However, I do think the 'Base' that dumb.

However, the 'base' will have pleny of chances to oppose nominations. A number of justices on the bench are getting old. I wouldn't be surpised if Obama during his presidency gets three justices. The big win for Dems would be Scalia dropping off from a bad case of vitriol. He's 71, but I'd say a spritely 71.

Consider the source

Of course, the source is in this case partially correct: the GOP is dumb enough to do what the Dems tell them to do.

However, it's important to differentiate between GOP senators and the wider opposition to BHO. The former have to be restrained. The latter can be free to tell the whole truth. The problem is that the minor leaders of the GOP - including therein those at this site - have already capitulated.

I don't mean to burst your bublble but . . .

I listened to the entire confirmation today. She's going to get confirmed. Grahm and Hatch basically told her they didn't like her but she was the presidents pick and that was that. The other junior Reps basically read verbatum the same talking points that reps have been saying for weeks with no effect.

It's all political posturing at this point.

And by the way, if you think McCain sounds old, listen to Schumer for more than two minutes. Maybe he sounds better on TV, but on C-Span radio he sounds like Treebeard from the LOTR movies.

-------------------

Sometimes I'm struck by how many good things can change from bi-partisan support. But they're very hard, but people get really stuck in this pointless ideological B.S. I guess it's because it's easier to bitch about this than make hard decisions and the work it takes to change the big stuff.

Let Sotomayor pass. Keep On Pelosi.

Sotomayer is an absolute god send for us.  She's catholic, probably pro-life.  Strong family values.  She is our Spectre.  I tell ya, dems are just hoping we put up a stink so they can kick her to the curb.  They all secretly want to replace her with an ultra lib.  If we give them an excuse, they can save face by saying to the Latino voting block..."Hey, we tried, but those damned republicans....."  DON'T PLAY INTO THE DEMS HANDS.

Keep on Pelosi.  She has managed a last ditch attempt at trying to save face.  The problem is her target is now the "worker bees" of the CIA.  And guess what, with no measurable republican leadership (thus protection), these CIA targets are now men and women without a country.....and that is a security risk.

You see, these people know stuff.  Stuff that is very valuable in the international community.  If they don't have a home here....I'm sure someone, from some country (ally or enemy)  will gladly offer them a home elsewhere.......if ya know what i mean.

Pelosi needs to be stopped; even if it means enticing Steny Hoyer to seek power.  Pelosi has become a security risk to the US.

"Us"?

I've been covering immigration issues for several years over literally thousands of posts. I realize the danger of having a former NCLR member on the Supreme Court. Others will have to simply wait and see it for themselves. At that point in time they should turn on those leaders who did nothing.

As for BHO nominating an "ultra lib", as I commented above that person would be even easier to oppose.

SS is actually very easy to beat, it's just flaws that BHO's opponents have that prevent that.

There's an interesting story at the CIA

One can only wonder how this is going to turn out. A very dangerous, high stakes game is being played.

Jeff Sessions is certainly giving you what you want.

. . .  listening now.

Be honest, he sounds like a tool; but he's getting the obvious arguements against her out of the way. I would say that she has handled them pretty well, but if you don't like her, you're still not going to like her.

She took on 'Wise Latina' and Ricci. She was easily prepared for those. If Reps were going to try to trip her up on those, they should have tried a different approach . . . and maybe Session isn't the delivery vehicle. It's hard to believe he was actually a lawyer at one point.

 . . .

Hatch is far better, but his line of questioning on the 2nd amandment and her subsequent answers are so abstruse as to be unquotable. It'll probably be a rorshache for any group who wants to make hay of whatever was said.

Hatch is visiting Ricci . . . again, far better than sessions.   . . . . but now it's falling apart. He's actually now letting her off the hook . . . wierd. Sorry, I'll talk more about this later. Gotta go.

Elections and winning give the Prez and his team the power...

One of the more poignant lessons that all those "conservatives" who sat out 2008 Election Day in their political snit over McCain not being conservative or libertarian enough to suit them should have learned is that elections, indeed, DO have consequences.

The Senate, purged of all those evil, wickedly disloyal RINOs, is now squarely in the hands of the Democrats.

The WH, with the help of those snitting and spite-filled conservative twits who sat out the election or, worse yet --voted for BobBarr-- is now in control by Obama and gets to pick the judges.  Many GOPers argued long and often about what might happen if the Dems and Obama got a hold of the opportunity to appoint 1-2-3 SCOTUS justices... but that didn't compel the snitting, spite-filled conservatives to drop their strategy of political suicide and engage in some reality.

Sorry NoMoreBlather, but Soto is gettin' some confirmation time in the short distance.  OBama will pull out the stops to nominate an even more progressive justice the next time and the time after that... unless those snit-loving, spiteful E-Day conservative goons get the message and support the GOP candidate in 2012 --no matter who it is.
