Huck Strikes Back at CFG, Endorses Don Young

I'm speechless at this. Huckabee endorses Don Young:

Don is one of the few members of Congress to totally understand the critical state of our nation’s infrastructure and when I was a Governor and Chairman of the National Governors Association, he was one of the few members of Congress who fully recognized the direct link between infrastructure and job creation and economic development. I consider him a personal friend and have enjoyed duck hunting with him, but I didn’t enjoy the fact that he is such a marksman that he put the rest of us to shame” Huckabee said.

Last winter, I was pretty vocal about the fiscal right calling off its jihad against Mike Huckabee. The primary reason John McCain and not Mitt Romney was the Republican nominee is because the right decided to focus single mindedly on destroying the un-nominatable Huckabee rather on the rising McCain.

Ever since, I've been interested in the idea of a reconciliation between the two camps. We've welcomed Governor Huckabee to The Next Right and hope to welcome him again. But moves like this show there's a lot of work to do before the fiscal and social wings of the party can unite again.

In a nutshell, the Club for Growth, Huckabee's arch-nemesis, has swung into action behind Sean Parnell. So, Mike Huckabee decides to return the favor by backing corrupt porker Don Young.

Even his blog commenters are slamming this endorsement. As Ambinder reports:

"You blew your reputation on this...and a reported 70% of Alaskans disagree with you," said one. Another: "This the best HuckPAC can come up with????" A third: "You have one problem with Don Young and it's called "The Bridge To Nowhere""

Huckabee's followers understand enough about fiscal / social conservative fusionism that you don't throw your weight behind an unelectable Republican whose "Bridge to Nowhere" branded the Congressional GOP as beyond redemption. And you don't do it by touting his ability to bring home highway funds!

Huck may feel some spite towards the Club and its allies, but this conflict is wholly manufactured. His grassroots understands that you don't get behind the AFL-CIO's favorite Republican. This could have been a great unifying moment: Huckabee and fiscal conservatives get together to kick out Don Young. Instead, Huckabee has just needlessly reopened the wounds of the primary season.

Contribute to Sean Parnell now.

It wasn't about spite.. it was about loyalty.

From Mike:

I have been following the comments regarding Don Young today with interest. Your opinions are important to me and our team, so having read another comment just now asking for an explanation of our endorsement, I wanted to make sure you heard from me directly.

Don Young has been a consistent pro-family, pro-life vote in the Congress. Don also endorsed my campaign and stood by me in the public arena defending my record from false attacks when other members of Congress wouldn't be seen with me. I don't expect everyone to agree with each endorsement we make. I am thankful that we are able to talk about our differences openly and respectfully (emphasis mine)

Patrick.. Mike knew what the result of this endorsement would be..

But you can't stab someone in the back that did right by you.. It's an outlier, not an indication of his own fiscal outlook.

This Is About Loyalty

Pure and simple, this is about Huckabee's loyalty to someone who helped him. This wasn't a slap at the Club. The CFG is being destructive by trying to turn this into a slapfight with Huckabee.

Disappointed With Huckabee

Huckabee was out for revenge, he has repeatedly called the Club for Growth the "Club for Greed".  Huckabee had a terrible fiscal record, and this part of his record was fair game, in my opinion.   If he had been our nominee, I would have voted for him, but I definitely had some major reservations about his record.

This endorsement will haunt Huckabee.  Endorsing a corrupt Republican like Don Young to get back at the Club for Growth is not a good way to get back into the good graces of the skeptical conservatives.

Loyalty to Cause or Personal Loyalty

Since when is personal loyalty the guiding principle for a good public servant?  One of the great failings of the Bush administration was loyalty to subpar individuals.  Huckabee seems to want to make the same mistake.  I hope he changes his mind.

Umm .....

an unelectable Republican whose "Bridge to Nowhere" branded the Congressional GOP as beyond redemption

I think it was right wing bloggers who did that, all on their own. According to you people eighty percent of Republicans in Congress are corrupt.  Why the shock that people believe you?

Meanwhile Democrats and indepedents continue to support Democrats who use earmarks without the slightest hesitation.

The net effect of the whole earmark crusade has been to persuade Republican voters that Republican members of Congress, as a group, are hopelessly corrupt. And this for a process which is perfectly legal!

Whatever the ethical or fiscal import of earmarks, this scorched earth assault on virtually the entire body of Republicans in DC has been the political equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot with a double-barreled 12 guage. A lot of earmark loving but otherwise conservative (including fiscal conservative) Republicans wil be replaced with Democrats who take more earmarks and are reliable libeals.

Jon Sandor ..

as you are probably aware .. not all earmarks are created equal .. secondly .. no .. Democrats don't blindly support Congresscritters who use earmarks with out hesitation ..  the problem is .. we don't have CfG type organizations to pony up money to primary a ton of people .. and even CfG doesn't always win .. it is not as easy as you think to primary Congresscritters .. no matter how bad they are

Oh, dear!

we don't have CfG type organizations to pony up money to primary a ton of people ..

You mean the unions, Move On, Soros, etc, etc won't pony up money to primary Sen Byrd. What does that tell you about the priorities of your party?

not all earmarks are created equal

Translation - Democratic earmarks - good, Republican earmarks - bad.  How very predictable of you. But you forgot to slip in your "Widestance" talking point.

Opacity, clean government

Earmarks weren't a big problem... until they became a ginormous problem.  A big, hairy, opaque, political horse-trading, weapon of appropriators problem.

And the rightosphere told the congress how we felt about it.

And they did it more.

We showed the leadership the path to redemption, by swearing off earmarks, one political ace-in-the-hole that might save their sorry hides from electoral armageddon.

And they said they were waiting on Nancy Pelosi to take action.

Good luck with that.

If you bring a slob to a restaurant....

Doncha think the other guests will blame you for his manners?

This is why porkaholics are such a problem for the GOP. We have lost support from the yuppie good government types who were willing to forgive differences on substative issues, but viscerally recoil from what they perceive as sleaze. A lot of folks were hard wired as kids with the mantra "We vote Republican because the Democrats are crooks from the Big City". Once we adopt the same behavior, well, what stops these voters from bailing?.....as 2006 showed...not much.

CFG-It's always about them!

Club for Growth, I've got news for you.....we're just not that into you!!!  It's not about you!!  Governor Huckabee endorsed a friend who shares many of the conservative values he does, who stood by him when those, like you, were attacking him unfairly!  It's about loyalty, something you know nothing about as you "sell" your attack plan to the biggest donation you receive!!  Perhaps the most respect lost for any one organization this election was for the Club For Growth!!  Millions and millions of us saw what a 550,000 donation could buy.  We saw a Club that did not evaluate a record fairly or look at the fact that Governor Huckabee's state was controlled by 70% democrats, had two mandated tax increases, etc.  Just attack, attack, attack!

Don't knock Huckabee's fiscal record

"Huckabee had a terrible fiscal record, and this part of his record was fair game, in my opinion."

Here are a few facts about Huckabee's fiscal record in Arkansas

Compiled by Joe Carter.

One of the things that is most often reported inaccurately is Governor Huckabee’s tax record. There will always be groups like The Club for Growth, and Cato Institute who will never be satisfied, and who will continue to attack Governor Huckabee.

These groups like to oversimplify an issue, and while Governor, Mike Huckabee learned that many issues were not cut and dried. State government's job is to provide prisons and state police for public safety, good roads for transportation and public education.

As Governor, that is what he did while being responsible with the revenue and state budget. Keeping the state budget balanced and spending as low as possible wasn't easy because he also had to deal with a state legislature that had the largest percentage of Democrats of any in the country as well as court mandates from judges who think spending more and more tax dollars is the only solution to any problem.
Tax Cuts
Mike Huckabee is a fiscal conservative who cut taxes almost 100 times in the state of Arkansas.
Mike Huckabee returned almost $400 million to Arkansas taxpayers. He believes it is immoral to take more money from taxpayers than is needed to run the government, and if a surplus occurs because of growth in the economy and good fiscal policy, it should be returned to the people.

He was the first Governor of Arkansas to pass a broad-based tax cut in the history of the state.

He also doubled the standard deduction to $2,000 for individuals and to $4,000 for married couples, as well as the child care tax credit and eliminated the marriage penalty.

He eliminated the capital gains tax on the sale of a home.

He eliminated the state income tax for families below the poverty line.

He reduced the capital gains tax for businesses and individuals.

He indexed the income tax to protect people from paying higher taxes because of "bracket creep."

Governor Huckabee left the state with almost a $1 billion surplus- a state record, setting the stage for further tax reductions. The “Huckabee Surplus” enabled his successor to follow Huckabee’s lead to begin the elimination of the state sales tax on food.

He urged that the surplus should go back to the taxpayers in the form of a rebate or tax cut.

He cut welfare rolls by almost 50 percent.

With respect to the tax and spending that he had under his control, spending rose about six-tenths of one percent a year during his ten-and-a-half year tenure.

Governor Huckabee established the Murphy Commission by Executive Order (his first as governor) to streamline government to save taxpayers' dollars and make government more efficient.

Governor Huckabee also led efforts to establish a Taxpayers' Bill of Rights and a Property Taxpayers' Bill of Rights, which established a uniform notice and due process procedure guaranteeing all Arkansans they will be treated fairly in the assessment of property taxes.

Tax Increases and answers as to why:

Governor Huckabee worked hard to ensure that any tax increase we needed were supported and approved by Arkansans. We were not going to have a case of the Legislature imposing general tax increases on the people behind closed doors.

He made sure any tax increase was targeted, time-limited, and addressed specific state needs. Huckabee has been outspoken in saying that a significant portion of almost $1 billion in state surplus should go back to the taxpayers. He has always believed that a tax refund or reduction makes more sense than a government spending spree.

In 1996 voters approved an increase in the sales tax to support conservation which was a wonderful investment in Arkansas. 1/8 cent sales tax increase approved by voters to fund conservation and park services to preserve Arkansas natural and cultural heritage.

In 1999, Arkansans supported a fuel tax increase that allowed Arkansas to completely rehabilitate the interstate highway system, changing the interstate system from one of the worst in the country to the best according to Truckers Magazine. The $1 billion project was completed on budget and on time. The legislature passed the gas tax, but it wouldn’t be implemented unless the people voted on, and approved, the bond issue; which was passed by an 80% vote of the people in 1999.

In 2001, a sales tax increase offset revenue lost from constitutional amendment cutting property taxes by $180 million. The sales tax increase and property tax cut were voted on by citizens of Arkansas – they chose how to be taxed.

In 2003, a cigarette tax increase of 25 cents per pack funded state healthcare obligations. Arkansas tobacco taxes are still low, 33rd in the U. S.

In 2003, there was a temporary increase in the income tax to offset the economic recession our country was facing in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. They were needed for one year, and unlike most “temporary taxes,” Governor Huckabee made sure that the legislature kept its promise to the people that it was eliminated after two years.
In 2003, Arkansas had a $110 million hole in the state budget that had to be addressed aggressively. Medicaid, education, and prisons were the main areas that needed funding to keep them operating. Those three services took up to 91 percent of the general revenue fund. Arkansas didn’t have the revenue coming in that was needed to meet the expenses going out and it got to the point where we didn’t have the money to meet basic obligations to the state.

In 2004, he allowed a 7/8 cent sales tax increase to become law without his signature to comply with a Supreme Court order to increase funding for education, which avoided the courts taking over public education in Arkansas. Mike Huckabee was the first governor in state history to oppose a tax increase. He had already cut state budget by 11%.

SPENDING

Club for Growth says that state spending in Arkansas increased 49% during Governor’s ten-year tenure. THIS MUST BE PUT IN CONTEXT – a 49% increase is in line with a 46% increase in aggregate state spending over same time period. It’s still much lower than the 70% increase in federal spending for that period.

The Governor didn’t control higher education spending as that is controlled by the trustees of each institution. Those who want to distort Governor Huckabee’s record of tax and spending includes those in higher education to further their own goals.

Arkansas ranks 43rd so far this decade in spending as a percentage of personal income – this is a fairer judge of spending given disparity between poorer and richer states.

States have to increase spending every year by at least 5-6% just to keep up with rising costs of healthcare, education, and other services.

Spending that Governor controlled, not federal pass-throughs and programs controlled by the Democrat legislature, rose only about six-tenths of one percent a year during his tenure.

Minimum Wage –he increased minimum wage by $1.10 to avoid passage of a constitutional amendment that would have increased minimum wage annually by the amount of inflation. The Governor accepted one-shot deal as price of avoiding regular increases.

Huckabee/Young - How special!

Really, Patrick? I don't see it that way at all. It seems perfectly normal to me, being a fiscal conservative, to oppose Mike Huckabee based on his fiscal record. That is not a jihad. It's simply not supporting a candidate who does not share your values.

Instead, Huckabee has just needlessly reopened the wounds of the primary season.

I'm glad he's shown you his real stripes. There will never be a situation where I will support Mike Huckabee. Try a new social conservative like Sarah Palin if you want to pull the party together. We are not opposed to social conservatives but Huckabee is a non-starter. After all, most of us voted twice for George Bush.

Gotta go. Can't wait to tell my buds how bad the Huckster has stepped in it now.

Please.. Huckster?

Thought we were past that nonsense. You can disagree with a man without disrespecting him.

Huck-Young

>>Thought we were past that nonsense. You can disagree with a man without disrespecting him.<<

I'm not sure that's CfG's M.O.

Renson

Thought we were past that nonsense. You can disagree with a man without disrespecting him.

Respect? For someone who just endorsed a thief? Are you kidding me?

You're here supporting and defending a man who has just endorsed one of the biggest crooks ever seen in Congress and now you're complaining that I disrespect him? That is the least of your troubles.

Don Young is one of the most corrupt people ever to be elected.  Young is very likely to end up in prison for stealing. Will Huckabee be proud of that too?

Should I have respect for someone who endorses a crook and works to get him sent back to Congress so he can steal even more from the people? Of course not. And neither should you.

I agree.

Personal loyalty is all fine and good. But we are talking about the welfare of the Republic and that of our country. What is Huck saying to us, as a Republican he values personal loyalty over the welfare of the Republic and the country? If that is his message, I now know all I need to know about Mr. Huckabee's qualifications for higher office.

Crook?..

When was the trial? Where is the conviction? When did being under investigation become proof of guilt?

Question Huckabee for supporting a big spender, there is proof of that, but lets not play guilt by association for a hypothetical scenario please.

Re: Crooks

Ok, Renson. You know best what Huckabee and his supporters want to be associated with.

Check out Don Young here.

Young is not that powerful..

Personal loyalty is all fine and good. But we are talking about the welfare of the Republic and that of our country. What is Huck saying to us, as a Republican he values personal loyalty over the welfare of the Republic and the country?

Since when could Young siglehandedly be responsible for the destruction of our Republic? His earmarks and pork are more devastating than those of almost every other congressman playing games in Washington? I don't think so. This is just a convenient stick to beat Huckabee with.

Young has become the scapegoat representative in people's minds for what is a far deeper and comprehensive problem. If you want to bash Huck for supporting an incumbent republican in a a year when almost all GOP incumbents are in danger, go ahead by all means, but lets hunt down everybody who's out there supporting any of these incumbents who're part of Washington's problem.

Young's personal legal problems are of more concern to me than his record in congress at this point. But since I believe in a Savior who forgave MY wrongs, i will not stand in judgement of his. In any case, he is considered innocent until proven guilty. This is still America right?

There are many who will seek to blow this out of proportion to drive a wedge between Mike and his base. Not going to happen.

As I mentioned in my post on this subject. Until such a time as I see a consistent pattern of questionable endorsements or positions on the issues coming from Huckabee, he will continue to have the benifit of the doubt from his base.

He didn't throw his supporter under the bus.. so we won't throw him.

The way I see it, this only 'loses' him votes he never had to begin with.
