It's Not the Pregnancy. It's the Vetting.

By far the most odious part of the smear-mongering around Sarah Palin is its intrinsic dishonesty. Sarah Palin's daughter's pregnancy may be off limits -- but why didn't it factor into the vetting process. It's not the pregnancy. It's the vetting.

Yeah. Right.

This is like questioning the agility of Obama's rapid response operation by replaying the Obama is a Muslim rumors in network primetime and assessing if the campaign is doing enough to respond, which is essentially what the media is doing by spreading the Daily Kos rumors. Make-believe biological impossibilities give way to startling revelations about the Palin family which open a door to questioning McCain's judgment.

If McCain's judgment is suspect, then the media basically maintains that Bristol Palin's pregnancy should have derailed Palin's VP prospects, had McCain known (forget the fact that he did). Is this what progressives and the media actually believe?

There's not a whiff of crisis in the air here in St. Paul. Just an enormous sense that the media has overreached and is really stepping in it.

sexist Left

I'm curious... how much of a story would this all be if Sarah Palin were a man?  I think her husband ought to come out and say that he'll raise both Trig and Bristol's baby while she serves as VP.  I don't see what the Left would have to complain about then.

There's not a whiff of crisis on Talk Radio either

Not that I got a huge sample while running some errands today, but I did get about 20 minutes of Rush and 20 minutes of Medved, plus I've read great reports about Mike Gallagher and, happily enough via the NYT, about an old favorite of mine, Laura Ingraham.  The audience members I heard call in were absolutely passionate in their defense not just of Palin's daughter Bristol and Palin's maternity of Trig (as opposed to faking a pregnancy on behalf of Bristol), but they were just as adamant about Palin's credentials to lead and govern.  Here are a few snippets, as well as I can paraphrase them:

  • "Sarah Palin runs the great State of Alaska while Barack Obama runs his mouth"
  • "Barack Obama's responsible for the welfare of a large campaign staff and coterie of reporters while Sarah Palin's responsible for the largest land mass in the country, 550,000 citizens, a $10 Billion budget and one of the largest domestic energy economies in the nation"
  • "Alaska shares a border with two foreign nations which means that its Governor does actually have more foreign policy experience than Barack Obama"

and so forth, and so on.  Oh, and forget the notion that the only ones really excited about this beautiful lady are the white male voters.  Most of the callers were conservative women, whom have never, ever seen so energized about a candidate.  I think we'll see a huge turnout in the Republican and Indendendent conservative women.  And maybe even a few conservative Dems also.

As for the Hillary supporters who are offended by Sarah Palin's candidacy, my expression of concern after today would be:  what-ever.  But that does remind me that I must say, for the record, that I love what Carly's doing with the Democrats for Hillary.  One of the best times I've had all week is watching this Newsweek interviewer become utterly incredulous as she interrogates John Coale, former Hillary supporter, on his new allegiance to John McCain.  It's utterly priceless!

county first?

A fully vetted and clearly qualified VP choice would help the voters to stay focused on differences in policy and leadership between the presidential candidates.    McCain himself  has stressed  the  importance of  a VP candidate ready to lead on day one.  Obama  has spent over a year talking with voters, responding well in  tough interviews and debates, and running the most effective campaign from either party to convince people he has the skills and judgement  needed.  With Palin,  it feels like watching a contestent in a fall reality show "An American President" where we tune in for the next  8 weeks  to see if can she learn the ropes and demonstrate her fitness to serve as backup to the most powerful leader in the world.  It's entertaining but distracts from the goal of electing the candidate  with the best vision,  policies and skills to lead our nation in these challenging times.

I read lots of progressive blogs and listen to talk radio at both ends of the spectrum and it's really not about the baby (and only indirectly about the vetting .) What gives me pause is  Mccain's impulsive decision making style and willingness to gamble the country's future on Palin's unknown and untested quaifications for leading a county of 300 million. A long hard fought campaign in 2012 is a more appropriate proving ground.

p.s. wise editorial writers at NYT see it similarly

"As far as we can tell, Mr. McCain and his aides did almost no due diligence before choosing Ms. Palin, raising serious questions about his management skills. The fact that Ms. Palin’s 17-year-old daughter is pregnant is irrelevant to her candidacy. There are, however, very serious questions about her political past and her ideology. "

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/03/opinion/03wed1.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

so go ahead and bash the source and ignore the questions raised by Palin's record.  Ignoring my posts from an opposing viewpoint will not get them to stop as I find opinions here interesting and slightly balancing to my worldview.

Find, the NYT is leftist

Find, the NYT is a leftist propaganda rag that is totally in the tank for Obama and the DEMS in general.  Therefore the only reason that piece of sh** pipe organ of leftist drivel that audaciously masquerades as "legitmate and objective journalism" would write such things about VP candidate Sarah Palin is because they hate the woman and our upset McCain chose a highly qualified woman who has more executive and "real world" experience than that affirmative action empty suit you call a candidate.

Pick your Poison

NYT  editorial for Romney

"Mr. McCain, rather than reinforce his admirable maverick roots, sought to jettison them with his choice of former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, a peace offering to the Republican corporate establishment"

NYT editorial for Pawlenty

"At a time when Americans clearly demand bold change from government, Mr. McCain moved in the opposite direction by choosing an uninspiring running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, who's primary attributes are that he is pleasant and nonconfrontational"

NYT editorial for Lieberman

"Mr. McCain clearly acknowledged the abject failure of eight years of Republican rule by choosing a lifetime Democrat, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, as his running mate. This is nothing but a desperate political gimmick intended to salvage a failing campaign".

As I said, pick your poison

McCain is showing a lack of leadership

First, I guess Patrick cannot find a way to spin the Palin story into a post about how internet gimmicks can fix everythign wrong with the Republican Party.  Since McCain's incomptent staff appears to have only used goggle to vet Governor Palin, it looks like the internet caused part of this problems.

McCain knew he was going to be the nominee since Feb, yet he waits until August to begin vetting VP candidates.  That alone is enough to warrant firing everyone on his staff.  They should have been working on packets for the top 20 candidates since Marsh.  Her name was being circulated and his staff would have before due diligence.

The Palin selection also shows that McCain's staff is either incompetent or that McCain will not listen to his staff. Either way, it means that McCain does not have the management skills to be president. Does anyone really want a president (not that McCain is going to win) that is either too stupid to understand his staff or incapable of putting a competent staff together.

The time for Republicans to make excuses for failed politicians needs to end.  McCain has demonstrated his incompetence and he should take the steps to correct instead of depending on others to make excuses.

country first

I read lots of liberal blogs and listen to talk radio at both ends of the spectrum and it's really not about the baby (and only indirectly about the vetting .) What gives me pause is  Biden's impulsive talk before thinking style and willingness to gamble the country's future on Obama's unknown and untested quaifications for leading a county of 300 million. A long hard fought campaign in 2008 is a not proving ground.

Vetting is about honesty, right?

I don't get why the "he didn't vet sufficiently" has that much weight. If Sarah Palin is an honest person, and John McCain's campaign asks her - "What embarassing things do we need to know about", wouldn't she just tell them?

It is far more likely that the campaign knew Bristol was pregnant and was waiting for an opportune moment to (gotta love the political parlance) 'flush the toilet'. They got scooped, that's all.

This whole rush to decry judgement is way over the top.

A more real issue is the hypocrisy the media are getting away with. Two points (there are others):

1. They want to attack her on her family because they hate the Republican meme of 'family values'. But they know this a vile form of attack, so they try to blame the victim - 'she put her children in the spotlight for ambition'.

2. They are demonstrably guilty of partisan bias in whose families and children they will embarrass.

Ace of Spade has a somewhat profane and vitriolic view on this, but is spot on, nonetheless.

http://ace.mu.nu/archives/272283.php

Your call, Republican candidates. You "assumed the risk." Do you want to hold office, or do you love and wish the best for your children?

We in the media will not permit you to have both.

What is truly amusing and so very frustratiing

What I find most amusing and frustrating about all of this is that the progressive women in this country now are saying that Palin should be back in the kitchen and taking care of the children.  REALLLY!?!?!?  And, the bigger story here is the fact that her daughter has made the tough choice to KEEP the baby instead of going down to Planned Parenthood and aborting the child.  Palin and her family have stood behind their daughter and are going to help her grow up really fast as she will now have  child to take care of.  You have to wonder why no one talks about that side of the story.

I hope she lays the wood to the press and everyone else with her speech tonight.  Then it shuts them all up and we don’t have to watch as our society stoops a little bit lower while they attack the women Vice Presidential candidate through her 17 year old daughter for not aborting a child!

It's just deflection

You want to talk judgement to lead?

How about starting your political career at the home of an unrepentent leftist terrorist.

That shows great judgement doesn't it.

How about sitting in the pews for 20 years of a radical (by mainstream standards) pastor, and not saying or doing a thing about it.

That shows great judgement doesn't it.

To me it shows someone who's willing to use those around him, no matter how dispicable, to advance his political career.

Everyone knows, that's how politics are played in the Windy City.  You scratch the right peoples backs and they keep you in power.

Obama did absolutely squat about trying to reform that system, and even helped move it along.

I'm glad the left wants to have an honest debate about the judgement of our candidates.

Obama at least understand the results of his actions

It makes sense for an up and coming black politician in Chicago to attend an all black church or play politics with the clout.  At least Senator Obama realized that it would advance his career and Senator obama realize that black politicians are treated to a double standard.

However, McCain was too stupid to realize that Senator Obama would play hardball even after winning his Senate seat by doing just that.

Policy gives a great example of the difference in the two men. Senator Obama knows that every illegal aliens that is put on the fast track to citizenship will eventaully become a Democratic voters and will support increasing the size of government.  SEnator McCain is too stupid to undertand that very concept.

Touche

A well made point about judgement. I look forward to the next two months as we see some goose-sauce-gander.

Vetting Sarah Palin

See here.

Love that opening sentence:

Love that opening sentence: “By far the most odious part of the smear-mongering around Sarah Palin is its intrinsic dishonesty.”

Glad to see you are back in the fold Patrick, for a while I thought that Talk Right would introduce a bit of diversity into Republican machine. By the way, Republicanism is a three legged stool, one of which is the inflexible, uncompromising, fundamentalist Christian Right. And we all know that without that group being on board, the three legged stool will topple…

The patriotic path to the White House is clearly outlined in your post. Issues are irrelevant and will not be discussed (Mr. Davis has already pronounced this as a mantra). If any questions are raised by the press (Did Ms Palin, as Mayor of her town, try to ban library books?), attack with the usual: The Left leaning “media has overreached and is really stepping in it”.

Let us not confuse Conservative principles with the Republican Party of Carl Rove. They really are different. How different? Facing the challenge of remaking the Republican Party, changing the brand identification if you wish, and probably losing, McCain caved, and sold his soul Rovian politics.

Once, in a land far away, Barry Goldwater faced a similar question, lost, yet became the father of modern conservatism. Does anybody really think he would embrace the fundamental Christian right the way McCain has done?

Ahh, yes the big bad Religious Right meme.

When all else fails attack religious conservatives.  Just how cliched are we going to get here?

Are you serious?

I've been reading The Next Right since it was launched in a hope that there could be a higher level of discussion and analysis here. So much for that.

If you can't, on your own, figure out why the media and the public are intensely focused on all things Palin right now, then there's no point trying to convince you as to why.

If you can't understand the very real need of the media to vet this candidate, then you're delusional.

If you don't understand that you, on the right, would be going crazy if the roles here were reversed, then you've gotten yourself too inside your own viewpoint to be of any value in analysis of this race beyond being a cheerleader for the right.

If you aren't offended by the suggestion, put forward by the McCain campaign, that Sarah Palin shouldn't be vetted in all regards, just as vigorously as all other candidates for the highest offices in our Nation, then you're sacrificing your ability to reason for your need to win.

I await the "serious vetting" of Barack Obama

I await the "serious vetting" of Barack Obama by the mainstream media.  At least, the MSM that doesn't get a tingle up their leg everytime the big O speaks.

If you want to call the mudslinging and passing around gossip "serious vetting" go right ahead.

Here's a preview of that vetting process, Keith

H/T to Stop the ACLU.  Please enjoy the entire article here.

Vetting after the fact

Article not opening me, but even if it is hard hitting, isn't it a day late and a dollar short.  Shouldn't the vetting for any candidate for President be before they are your nominee?
