Obama's Manipulation of Patriotic Imagery
Yesterday, Barack Obama's campaign released a "Fight the Smears" website -- basically a repackaging of the campaign's pushback on "whitey" / the Muslim rumors / patriotism.
But what's striking is the site's liberal use of patriotic iconography. See these American eagles wrapped in the Obama logomark:

This matches the campaign's use of a version of the Great Seal of the United States, seemingly lifted from a 19th century historical print and superimposed with an Obama logo. This is visible for a moment as the site's background image before the page you're on completely loads:

Doesn't this seem like an odd use of imagery for a candidate who has repeatedly denounced the manipulation of patriotic imagery for political purposes, going so far as to refuse wearing a flag pin? And he does it in a way that goes well beyond plopping a stylized flag in your logo.
Patriotic evocations are inevitable in campaign signage. The stars and stripes abound. Romney had a disembodied eagle. Hillary a field of three stars and three stripes. Obama's main logo evokes a Steinbeckian field with rising sun, set to the red, white, and blue.
These examples don't bother me. But in the examples above, Obama seems to be treading too close to the line of conflating the symbols of our government with his campaign.
Again, the Great Seal looks like this:

The most familiar application of this is the seal of the President, use of which is officially restricted to the White House only (generally, if you're going to use it on a website, you have to alter or snip it, though this is unevenly enforced). The federal eagle is generally recognized as an emblem of our government, not to be used for campaign purposes.
The only other Presidential logo in modern times to tread close to this line was John McCain's 2000 logo, which used an unaltered American flag. The Kerry-Edwards logo in 2004 used a stylized version of the 48-star American flag, skirting around this criticism.

McCain's 2008 logo is quite different:

Again, campaigns use patriotic imagery all the time. What's different -- in an "I know it when I see it" kind of way -- is Obama crudely grafting his logo on historical renderings of the official seal of the United States.
At a minimum, it's strange coming from a candidate who pointedly condemns anyone who wrap themselves in the flag as a mask for "true patriotism."

Good Detective Work, and a Potential Example of NLP
The subtle message that you've discovered in the image is fascinating. I've been interested in Neuro-Linguistic Programming, aka NLP, for several years. To the uninitiated, NLP is Hypnosis 2.0. While it's still disputed as a model or theory, mainly it's a set of techniques or strategies for enhancing communication and personal influence.
One of the features of NLP is its focus on modalities. Sensory modalities are visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, gustatory and kinesthetic. Once the hypnotist determines whether the target's primary modality is auditory, visual or kinesthetic, then a subconscious message can be encoded in appropriate forms such as images, music, text, semiotic symbols, etc. The human brain cognitively filters out milliions of bytes of information constantly, but the subconscious message will pass successfully through the filter, register, and somewhat akin to a Trojan Horse, can be used to trigger specific behavior any time that message is replayed in the future. This technique can be used to great benefit on subjects who are susceptible to behavior modification through reprogramming. It's more elegant than simple "brainwashing" repetition because it employs a multiplicity of modalities and motivators.
One way the practitioner aligns with the subject is through modeling the subject's body language. I've continuously been fascinated that Barack Obama, a man who was raised in my home state of Hawaii where the predominant linguistic style is what we call "pidgin English", has a chameleonlike ability to mimic a Southern Accent when he addresses certain audiences. Shelby Steele also points this out in his book about Barack Obama titled "A Bound Man". Shelby and I both find this mannerism quite obnoxious, but perhaps it does endear Obama to an audience with a similar speech pattern. And to be fair, I'm equally guilty of speaking "pidgin" when I'm in Hawaii while never using that inflection in California. It's a code to the locals that says "I belong here, I'm one of you, I'm authentic."
While watching Obama's early primary speeches - the ones which had the effect of overcoming people with emotion to the point of bringing them to tears and fainting spells - I noticed him applying what I thought were several anchoring techniques. When he said something that was designed to create highly charged positive emotion, he'd accompany it with a specific hand gesture. Later in the speech, he'd make another statement designed to elicit positive affect, and use the same hand gesture. The NLP potential here is that later, long after the speech, he can employ that same hand gesture on the news or in a debate and no matter what's being said, and the subjects of earlier "programming" will respond to the gesture (referred to as an anchor) with that same favorable emotion toward him as they had during the initial programming cycle. This is just a peanut gallery theory of mine, I'm not a professional hypnotist, but I do enjoy wrapping my mind around the possibilities of mass hypnosis techniques being applied to millions of people in rallies and on TV who are so primed by their hatred of George Bush that they've become emininently ripe and eager for reprogramming.
Some people are born with an innate understanding of how to do this, others study it and apply it academically. NLP has been informally employed for thousands of years, but it came to prominence as a discipline with the work of Milton Erickson, who used the technique of "telling stories" to embed certain codes and signals for the purpose of influencing behavior.
Repetition, anchoring, embedded signals, codes and messages, bypassing cognitive filters and subconscious programming, it's all fascinating. I look forward to more of your fine technical analysis in the future, Patrick. Maybe someone will use your deconstruction and to reconstruct a similar strategy for McCain. I hope that will be a good thing. ;-)
Gee, Didn't know tha Dude had Artists working for him
For a Guy who explained away the Symbolism of wearing the American Flag as a Lapel Pin, he seems to have looked far and wide for a Replacement.
IF He wants change....then he should Replace the Eagle.....
Throw in some YELLOW color for his Retreat strategy,
Some CODE PINK color for his Contributions he Received,
Put Some chrome "Twenkies" on for his fellow Black followers.....
and we've got "Pimp my LOGO"
Accents and oratory
Apropos of Obama "adjusting" his accent to the audience would be Connecticut-raised, private-school educated George W.Bush adopting a shaky imitation of a southern redneck speech pattern that was not part of the culture he was raised in. Certainly no one else in his family speaks that way. To me, he sounds like someone who was raised in England, trying to impersonate John Wayne in "Rio Bravo."
Without going into the minutiae of why Obama is a commanding, charismatic speaker (gestures, inflection, etc.), the fact remains that he is one of the most gifted orators of his generation, and gifted orators have an edge over those who do not bring that weapon to the contest. Obama's oratory skills are highly reminiscent of the black ministry, and have obviously benefited from that influence.
I'm not sure McCain wants to share a stage with Obama, where the differences in physical stature, age, charisma and oratory skills will be brutally obvious. In fact, it's hard to imagine a suitable venue for McCain to take the fight to Obama, who now dominates the Internet that McCain has never himself used. By selecting such a luddite candidate, the Republican party has conceded the most important battleground of the 21st Century to a man whose candidacy is a direct result of his mastery of the new medium.
I think it's time for conservatives to start thinking about a presidential candidate for 2012.
Luddite Candidate!
I like it - and you know, it is true that McCain is an absolutely Old American archetype as Peggy Noonan characterized Old America in her column this weekend.
Both Noonan in her column, and Diana West in her wonderful book The Death of the Grown-up: How America's Arrested Development Is Bringing Down Western Civilization, indicate that there may be a real longing by some people in this country for a return to a more Luddite style of leadership. Perhaps having a President who blogs on the Huffington Post is not every American's ideal.
As for his oratory, Barack Obama is absolutely stellar when it comes to reading a teleprompter - except for the complete lack of eye contact with his real audience or the camera, as he exhibited in his world-famous "Race Speech" in Philadelphia. Any time he's not scripted, his "oratory" is so ful of "uh" and "um" and complete gaffes that it's even more embarrassing to watch him than it is to watch George W., whom I agree with you has a very, very odd accent himself.
The scary thing about Obama's historical, political and literary gaffes (I have documented 47 so far since the beginning of the Primary race) is that, unlike John McCain, he cannot claim to be having a "senior moment". Perhaps he suffers from "CRS" Syndrome? That means he Can't Remember Shite. Not a good quality in a President of the United States, especially since Joe Lieberman isn't on his team. Heheh.
Obama a Hypocrite
UNPOSSIBLE
What's the problem?
It’s clear to me that Obama realizes that in order to play this game, one must wear the proper jersey.
This should be greeted with cheers from the Right. After all, some of them got real upset when Obama didn’t wear the flag or otherwise dressed himself up in patriotic iconography.
This is what the Right wanted, right?
What’s the American flag, anyway? A symbol of freedom and sacrifice? One might think so. But one would be wrong.
It’s merely a superficial means to display one’s patriotic identity.
Nothing screams “I love theUSA ” than a Hello Kitty American Flag String Thong for women. Am I right???
Or perhaps the next time you want a good workout, perhaps you should beat the sh*t out of the American flag. Nothing says “I love theUSA ” than good uppercut right on the stars and stripes.
You know, I used to think that the only proper place for the stars and stripes was on a flag. Not anymore though.
The next time I start feeling patriotic, I think I’ll just wipe the BBQ sauce from my kisser with Old Glory.
F*ck it.
Funny...you don't *seem* like a member of the CHRC
Póg, no offense er nuttin' but either yer Richard Warman or yer good Irish screen name's been hijacked by that fascist tosser.
I definitely know what you mean about the right jersey:
Nice emblem
Nice emblem
Flags | American Flags
Flags of the World | British Flags
That depends
Only if it was made in a labor camp in China.

Good and Bad Luck for the Irish Today...
First the good news - you heard, of course, about Declan Ganley leading the (so far) successful fight for liberty and halting the handover of more power to the EU. There's an interesting parallel here with some of the anti-democracy complaints lodged against the Democratic Party during their Primary process:
And the sad news - may Tim Russert rest in peace, he passed away today from a heart attack. Michelle Malkin posted a lovely transcript of Tim's guest spot with Rush Limbaugh during the week of Ronald Reagan's funeral. For Reagan fans, this will bring back some good memories of both Reagan and Russert. I didn't agree with Russert much, but I always thought he was decent guy.
As for CelticFC, coming from a mixed marriage (dad's mom was a MacLeod from Skye and mom's dad was a Reilly from Ulster), I would've risked life and limb in public by rooting for both the Celtics and the Rangers at the same time, but I'm alive to tell about it since the dilemma was smartly resolved when I married an LFC fan.
Check out this great Pogues site, complete with Celtic Punk tunes and 2008 tour info.

I think you missed his point...
Obama never said he "denounced the manipulation of patriotic imagery for political purposes." Those are your words, not his.
He was speaking specifically, very specifically, about wearing the ubiquitious flag pin on one's lapel. He said "[the flag pin] became a substitute for I think true patriotism." He never made any sweeping generalities about patriotic imagery, as you would have your reader's believe.
He was specifically saying that the flag pin had become a way to represent yourself as a "patriot" without necessarily having to do anything else. Instead, he would prove his patriotism by actually "being" patriotic, and not just wearing something that represents patriotism in the abstract.
Of course, you can't trust anything I have said since I watched his speech and was apparently magically hypnotized by his NLP. LOL.
Nice post. Good analysis.
