Quick Hits: Alex Castellanos, KY-SEN, AK-1
Submitted by Patrick Ruffini on Tue, 05/27/2008 - 14:32
- Republican media guru Alex Castellanos has an interesting frame on the future of conservatism: Governing is too important to be left to the government.
- KY-SEN: The netroots is touting a Rasmussen poll showing Democrat Bruce Lunsford ahead of Mitch McConnell 49-44. Whether this poll is bogus or the results of Lunsford's post-primary name ID bounce, it's a wake-up call. Being tagged as a Washington Republican/appropriator is a liability everywhere, even in a state that seems destined to vie with Utah/Wyoming for the biggest McCain blowout in November. Still, I'd rather have bad polls in a sleeper race like this first materialize now than after Labor Day so there's self-awareness and time to correct.
- AK-1: Republican primary challenger and Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell is even or ahead of Don "Bridge to Nowhere" Young in AK-1. Parnell is one of the good guys -- a Sarah Palin Republican trying to put away one of Congress's most corrupt appropriators. This could be THE primary race of the cycle. Give what you can.
Update from Soren: Stu Rothenberg doesn't buy the poll and points to one with McConnell up 11.

Lunsford
Lunsford has run for office several times here in KY without success. Usually he loses in the primary, but cleared that hurdle this time.
As a former nursing home operator in the past he's been hit with commercials from his opponents of the "my mother was mistreated by Bruce" variety. The reality is there will always be somebody unhappy with the level of service their parents received, and willing to cry for the camera. These tended to be pretty effective in the past but weren't used extensively this round.
McConnell will have no such problems putting the weeping daughter on the screen. Sadly this will be very effective and I think will be sufficient to give Mitch another term. Although I'd really like to see Mitch reelected, I fear the bare knuckle tactics will be required.
I guess it's just hard for a nursing home operator to make it in politics. Just too much potential baggage from previous dealings. Too much potential for the "My mom would still be alive if ..." commercials. Pity.
IIRC
Travis Childers was a nursing home operator.
Very good news out of Alaska.
Very good news out of Alaska. Taking out Don Young will demonstrate that Republicans are interested in cleaning our own house.
Lunsford v. McConnell
Lunsford also has a little problem in the fact that he has donated and lent his support to McConnell in the past. That'll definitely be appearing in ads and will blunt at least some of the criticism he lobs at McConnell.
Also, Lunsford had the luxury of having a relative unknown as an opponent in primary whose ads were borderline creepy, except for the "Mud Man Lunsford" spot. It was on par with some of the great ads that McConnell has run in past races. Fortunately for Lunsford, it was the last in the series of ads to run (at least in my part of the Commonwealth -- extreme western Kentucky). Had Greg Fischer run more spots like "Mud Man Lunsford" all along, he might have won.
