We Should Fear Huffington

"He who controls the present, controls the past. He who controls the past, controls the future." - George Orwell

When the Huffington Post launched on May 9, 2005, most conservatives including myself, sneered. To be sure, there was plenty to sneer about, with the likes of John Cusack passing verbal gas about his experiences months earlier at Hunter S. Thompson's funeral. It was a clearinghouse of mostly worthless opinions, many of them from Hollywood.

Since then, HuffPo has evolved into something very different: the newspaper of the Internet, with a concerted strategy to expand into content verticals like Entertainment (going for the Perez Hilton link love) and Local, starting with a Chicago edition. It's doing real investigative journalism (meet Mayhill Fowler, Obama donor). They've hired serious investigative/research types like Nico Pitney away from the Center for American Progress.

Arianna confirmed this basic approach in her talk today at PDF, and it is scary.

She began by railing against the "false objectivity" of the mainstream media. She cites the tendency to match global warming believes with skeptics on public debate shows, when in fact the media should acknowledge one side as The Truth and be done with it.

She says the fact that Iraq is an unmitigated disaster is an objective Truth and the media should never consider reporting on it as anything but. And if they don't, the "newspaper of the Internet" will.

Townhall's Chuck DeFeo, on stage, rightly calls this out this out as a return to the worst of old media's Voice of God.  Except this time, more overtly in service of a partisan agenda.

But Arianna's emphasis on defining The Truth underscores a leftist modus operandi: control the information flow. While conservatives scramble to control the downstream opinion flow, Huffington has a larger vision of her media empire as a source of pseudo-objective news. Huffington's vision is to focus on hard news and investigative journalism with a liberal tilt as a lever for control of The Truth.

The left has long understood that to control the media is to control the first draft of history. But HuffPo is not a mere opinion or activist site. It aims to be The New York Times of tomorrow, with the nutroots, and not mild-mannered red wine sipping liberal editorial page writers, at the helm.

This is something we need to be paying attention to.

The Media is Powerful, But

I think the single biggest obstacle to the conservative movement has always been the liberal, mainstream media.  It's not a myth, it's real, and we go into every election with a severe handicap because of it.  The Democrat Party would have been a permanant minority party long ago if it wasn't for the fact that 90% of all our media comes through a liberal lens.

I've often thought that conservatives would get a lot more bang for their buck if instead of contributing to political campaigns and think tanks, they should just pool their money together and purchase controlling interests of various media outlets.

In terms of the Huffington Post, however, I think you overstate their influence.  I don't feel their influence comes anywhere near say, The Drudge Report.   Our real media problem comes from the network nightly news, major newspapers, and weekly news magazines.  That is where the deciding voters get most of their information.   The Huffington Post has a nice little niche, but I don't think it's anywhere near actually swaying any elections.  Most of their readers have already made up their mind about where they stand ideologically.

Note _how_ it works.

They're well represented on all of the 'social' networks. An article about the weather from the Huff will get a chunk of diggs - and anything with any substance at all makes it to the front.

It only takes a tiny bit of time to 'digg' something, and each click is actual advertising.

But the big 'righties' don't have auto-digg-buttons, or support comments, or both. Powerline, Instapundit, Hot Air, etc.

HuffPo Model

While The Huffington Post has momentum there's going to run into trouble when webloggers stop offering their content for free. That's what launched the site and gave it some legitimacy. What happens when Mayhill Fowler wants a few bucks for her work and won't be consigned to only have access to a large audience?

Maybe that won't happen. But what will is arrogance Huffington brings to all her endeavors. It would be quite ironic for the Greek internet maven to be done in because of her own hubris.

As A Californian...

Arianna is NO ONE to fear.  She's a political ho-bag.  Everytime this [expletive deleted] opens her commie-accented mouth, she loses.  California loathes her.  They kicked her and her husband's ass in the 1994 Senate election.  Then, he kicked her ass to the curb.  Her ex-husband was so alienated by her nasty social-climbing personality that he abandoned his heterosexuality as well.  In 2003, California voters, AGAIN, kicked her square in her fat feta-chumping face placing her in 5th place, behind the Green candidate and Tom McClintock in the recall election.  She writes books that no one reads.  Even after she launched her vanity site, her books bombed.

And the Huffington Post?  Thanks for bringing up Mayhill.  She is responsible for the only notable 'get' from that libtwat site this year by reporting on Obama's playing a minstrel to a host of Frisco billionaires by calling working-class people clingy.  That was an 'own' goal so to speak.  I'd like to see Stupidianna plow more money into more losing causes because at this rate, she may even hand the Republicans Congress as well.

Edited for language. Watch it. -Patrick

Red, don't sugarcoat it - tell us how you really feel

Damn - have you been watching those flatulent Canadian superstars Terrance and Phillip in Asses of Fire again?  They've definitely corrupted your mind - and Kyle's Mom is not going to be happy with that language, young man.  She's gonna tell you to go wash that blog out with soap immediately!!

DUDE

Don't use our freedom against us by filling an emotional post with really vile languge. Edit yourself mein freund, else we resemble 'Those people'. (DailyKook,Huffzbullah)

Are you kidding me?

Fear the Hordes of Huffzbullah? I don't think so ,pal. Those Moonbats are as inept, misguided and lacking in decency and rational as a D.C 6th grade classroom. Maybe you are confusing the fact that a cesspool attracts and breeds millions of mosquito's but they are still just mosquito's. bugs. I squash bugs. Huffzbullah might be positioning itself as an advertising giant for the Moonbat Media but c'mon....really, 'Those People' cannot help but fail, that's the only aspect of their existence that they can actually plan for and expect on a consistent basis.

This machine kills Moonbats

Huffy

No, not scary, instructive.

What can we be afraid of today?

I swear this whole blog has been devoted to telling us how far behind the Left we are. So far it hasn't helped remedy the situation or even pointed in the right direction. Reading this blog is like going to the doctor and having him tell you over and over that there are a lot of people who are healthier than you but then refusing to prescribe any treatment.

Actually, the prescription may be embedded within the diagnosis

I know, I sort of thought the same thing - well if you're going to tell us what's wrong, then why don't you solve the problem for us by hmmm...let's see now....setting up a collaborative network that will help all worthy Republicans get elected in 2008!  Yeah, why don't you do that, you hi-tech-loving Smugsters!!

Ok so moving right along, if you pay attention, and I mean really pay attention and read all the posts and comments (which is a lot of work, trust me), you can mine some really useful tools out of this site.  For example, one of my favorite RUTs (really useful tools) is Slatecard, which lets you pick and choose the Republican candidates you feel most worthy of your donations.  This is like paying taxes only to the projects you feel are worth paying for - unlike donating to the RNC who's going to use your money wherever they see fit in their big, monolithic, good ole boy organization.  This is how we can support great people like Sean Parnell to beat Don Young even if we don't live in Alaska, etc.  This is how we completely circumvent and give the 1-finger salute to the RNC when they don't do the "Right" thing!  HOW COOL IS THAT!?

I don't have time to make a complete RUTs list just now, but maybe I can do it later (or you can too).  But one of the things I learned about going to my doctor is that if they tell me I have a problem, I like to research my own solutions because if I depend only on them to fix me, then I might not get well as quickly as I would if I were proactive.  So don't give up, dig-dig-dig and poke around and you'll find some really useful stuff out here.  And I'll try to find time later to post a list of RUTs that I like.

The Internet Isn't All That

I enjoy this site, but one of the mistakes that many make here is assuming that a vast majority of the voting population 1) uses the internet as much as we do and 2) spends as much time on political sites as we do.

I know many people, in all age groups from 20 - 80, who barely check email once per day - let alone surf the internet regularly.  I also know people who are constantly online - playing games like WoW or Fantasy Baseball, but wouldn't know the Daily Kos or Little Green Footballs if it bit them.

Obama's interent presence has been brilliant, but without the liberal MSM and Hollywood carrying his water for him, and without a Republican President with a 30% approval rating, he would be down ten points.

Net isn't everything

The chief people behind The Next Right would be the last to say the internet is the be-all, end-all for conservative victories. What the internet allows campaigns to do is more efficiently feed off voters' energy. To generate that energy requires good, inspiring ideas put together with effective messages. A great, winning example we see right now is Newt Gingrich's "Drill Now" campaign. A great idea combined with a simple message and internet technology has gotten over a million petition signatures. So no, cool internet toys won't fix the GOP's electoral troubles.

What Media has Huffington Been Watching?

"[Huffington] began by railing against the "false objectivity" of the mainstream media. She cites the tendency to match global warming believes with skeptics on public debate shows, when in fact the media should acknowledge one side as The Truth and be done with it.

She says the fact that Iraq is an unmitigated disaster is an objective Truth and the media should never consider reporting on it as anything but. And if they don't, the "newspaper of the Internet" will."

The MSM has been anything but objective on Iraq and global warming.   The media is already doing what Huffington wants.  What is she complaining about?  And if she somehow surpasses the New York Times and CNN as the largest media outlet,  what would change?

Huffington is pathetic, but not scary.

Conservatism

I would just like to say that the word Conservative used to mean something positive....like "I conserve water in a drought."

Now, it means mean-spirited people who bully themselves and their way into whatever context they choose.....starting immoral wars, discriminating against homosexuals.

I live in the Bay Area -- near San Francisco, and I am proud to be liberal -- open-minded, open-hearted and caring.

If you and yours are afraid of Arriana Huffington, then you are pathetic!  Get a clue about this new world of the internet....Daily Kos rocks!!!

How refreshing when we will have a Democratic majority and President OBAMA in the White House.

George Bush and Dick Cheney should be tried for WAR CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY!!

January 20, 2009 cannot come soon enough!!!

What a great post!

I could write a thousand posts trying to explain the mindset of today's liberals, but nothing, nothing, does it better than a liberal herself, or himself, whatever the case may be.

Now the question is; how, as conservatives, do we deal with a mindset which has been so illustriously displayed before us today in this post?

The real answer is: We can't.

Only by actually experiencing the fruits of their own political illusions can the real truth be reviled to a liberal -- it has something to do with cognitive dissidence or some such thing.

In conclusion, if destiny ordains the election of Barack Obama as the next president of this Republic, lets look upon it as a fortuitous opportunity to lay a proper fiscal conservative political foundation for the next 2010 election and beyond.

Faux Noise? ..

What do you call Faux Noise?  Doesn't that have a bigger microphone than HuffPo?  Or are you guys mad that Arianna discovered what a cesspool the Republican party has become?

One Channel That Moonbats Fear more than anything...

FOXNEWS

It's hilarious to see the Moonbats expose their ill-balanced grasp of reality as they thrash about and exclaim 'FAUX NEWS IS DA DEBIL!!!' before being puncuated by the nerdy <cackle> and <snort> that follows most of what 'Those People' say when they firmly believe that they are Onto something.

One refreshing thing about this site is the wide variety of topics and perspectives. Look at the two latest post just on this thread offered to us by Koskooks I'm sure, since thier exalted Libaloon nancylad just linked to this story on 'That site'.and you see Exactly the mindset they have created over there by 'troll-rating,banning,and whatever else the moonbats do to people that don't conform to the Zombie-line they have established. Both post could have been posted by any one of the thousands of 'Those people' and it would have been exactly the same.

McCain will win this election. Have no doubt about this, and FOXNEWS will always be watched by more people than ANY of the dozens of Moonbat news channels.

..........How's AIRAMERICA doing?

Faux Noise ...

have you seen the ratings? .. Do you understand what Faux's best demographic is?  It's not the 25-54(which is what advertisers want).  It's old people!!  That means that Faux has no where to go but down .. and as far as Air America .. sorry  .. but liberals don't get need talking points to function .. we can think for ourselves .. we aren't the ones banning science in the classroom

Delicious Moonbats

This is why I think this site is going to soar high into the Blogosphere. It will allow 'Those People' to post their Talking Points...

Submitted by Calvin Jones an... on Tue, 07/01/2008 - 18:56"have you seen the ratings? .. Do you understand what Faux's best demographic is?  It's not the 25-54(which is what advertisers want).  It's old people!!  That means that Faux has no where to go but down"

...while claiming that they do not need 'Talking points' because they "Think for Themselves"

<KOOokoOO>

This is why, as a Republican that lives in Cynthia Mckinneys district in GA., that I voted for her. Simply because I believe that allowing people to see and hear for themselves how "Those People" compose themselves is far more effective than any description that one might read or hear about. Please All Ye Moonbats, Come one Come All to show everyone what is on your minds.

Please don't pull any punches...seriously we really really want to see more of 'You People' around here. At least I do.
