I'm sorry, but when exactly did a man who can't even run a 911 service properly get to chew out the union, which at least manages to work on time and overtime, effectively churning out thousands of cars and keeping other businesses in line?

Optics, people, optics.

At this rate, Bunning's seat is toast -- bankrupt all of the Big 3, send all the parts manufacturers out of business, cost Tennessee the auto jobs from the Japanese. This may sound like a slippery slope, but It's scarily plausible.

Blaming it on the Republicans again, RT?

When Baucus (D-MT), Biden (D-DE), Kennedy (D-MA), Kerry (D-MA), Lincoln (D-AR), Reid (D-NV), Tester (D-MT),  & Wyden (D-OR) could have provided the sufficient YEA's?

Starting at 52... add 8... and there was your Auto bailout.

kerry's out of the country.

dunno about the other folks. But if you know that you don't have the votes, then it's politically expedient to let some of your shakier people vote against (and Reid I believe needed to vote against to have the option to bring it up later. parlimentary politics not my specialty.)

So I guess that's a strawman.

(for my part, I'd love to see the TARP money go to the autobailout. much more productive than keeping bank's balance sheets stable while they torpedo the rest of the economy)

A lot either gets done, or doesn't get done...

...when elected officials "aren't available" to vote.  I'm very harsh with this:  If congress is in session, it's your duty to be there.  So that's no excuse for any of the Not Voting crowd.

But , how politically convenient for all...

What it really means is that it will pass in the near future, but with more "goodies" for the beneficiaries... not more concessions.

doubt it. this is money to tide them over into January/February

congress is out till after Christmas. The money will come from the executive branch, and probably with NO strings attached (but considerably less money than originally specified).

Don't blame the Republicans....

The Democrats had the votes if they voted as a block.  That's what happens when you are in charge of something, you have this thing called "responsibility".  Just because the Bush Administration abdicated it for the better part of 8 years does not mean the Dems get a free pass.  I think one of the greatest problems the Republicans have is that when you put market yourself as the party of grown-ups people hold you to a high standard.  Dems have had Congress for 2 years and every step of the way people still try to blame the Republicans when things don't get done.  It's like no one expects the Democratic Party to be effective in legislation or even responsible for the branches of governement they control.

Bunning's seat is pretty safe

Until I see evidence of KY DEMs pushing their best statewide candidate.  All speculation is on Ben Chandler, but he has not shown interest because he has a safe house seat.  And the other candidates are pretty second fare.  Bunning could loose it by simply by doing something stupid.  Which is why he be pushed to retire.

But either way it all starts with the challenger, who will he or she be and thus what kind of campaign will he or she run?  Well so far no serious movement by a prospective challenger.  Thus until a bluedog or a Louisville lib with some money starts putting out the interest, then the Dem's chance don't loook to good.
