This is a proud day for the American Heartland.

I would hope that Republicans might listen -- this is not the time to be moving more towards extremism.

Well

This is great news for McCain!

The significance is

that virtually no court will support efforts to restrict same-sex marriage.  This isn't just a Massachusetts thing anymore.  I mean, we're talking about Iowa, the embodiment of the heartland.

they're old school republicans

of the Lincoln variety.

Shouldn't come as any surprise.

Gay marriage is a losing issue

Gay marriage should be a total non-issue for real Americans (tm). It neither picks our pockets nor breaks our legs.

*giggles* and while they're at it,

they may adopt some kids! (which will go some way towards our orphan problem).

Now that's what I call a practical solution -- creating good homes for kids.

This issue should not be

This issue should not be decided by the courts.  IMO it's a matter for the voters or the legislature.  The real harm is that the courts are allowed jurisdiction, not whether they decide pro or con.

Presumably the religious right will be unhappy.  Had they allied with the GOP's limited-government branch instead of with its spendaholics and crooks, I'd take their concerns seriously.  They didn't and I don't.

the legislature voted on a constitution.

it's the court's job to interpret it, in new conditions.

this is how federalism works.

and yes, it is convoluted, and yes the people will get a chance to decide -- by electiong social conservatives, if they want...
