Is The Next Right my new home?

Hello everyone, my name is Robert L. Mayo. I am looking for a new home for my writing, and thought it would be good to meet all of you to see if The Next Right could be that home. 

I should start off by telling you a little about myself. I am a 47 year old man in Ashburn, Virginia. I live with my girlfriend and our two cats. In my private life I am also known as Bob, Honey/Idiot and Big Not Cat Who Brings Food. 

My background:

At various points in my life I have worked for NASA, been a defense contractor, owned a restaurant, sold real estate and run several gentleman's clubs, i.e. bare naked ladies and booze. I am attempting a mid-life career change and am currently pursuing a degree from the London School of Economics through their external program. 

My politics:

I consider myself a strong conservative. On national defense, I am a proud neo-con and think we should have bombed Iran last Thursday. On fiscal issues, my hero is Sen. Tom Coburn. On social issues, I am a bit more moderate with libertarian instincts. I think Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) should be speaker, I intend to support Bobby Jindal in 2012 and I think Rep. Ron Paul is an honorable man, but unfortunately, nuts. 

Why I'm here:

For quite some time, I have been writing at RedState and I think I was generally well received. However, last month I became aware of a policy from The Directors regarding discussions of abortion that I objected to. After a great deal of thought and soul searching, I decided that as a matter of principle, I should leave RedState. That discussion can be found here. 

Now that you know a bit about me, I'd like to know more about you and Next Right. I have read through the site, but I would still like to get a better sense of Next Right and its community. What is it like to be part of Next Right? In addition, I do have a few specific questions. As a matter of policy, does Next Right lean strongly towards one particular flavor of conservatism? Are people who disagree welcome? Are there any written in stone rules I should know about? 

Perhaps I should mention one more thing. I'm an atheist. I know, I know. You're thinking “What? A conservative atheist?????” Yes, we do exist. About 1/3 of non-religious people in America are politically conservative. You just never hear about us because we don't run around screaming into the cameras and filing lawsuits to get In God We Trust taken off the money. I don't know if that would be a problem, just throwing it out there.

I can't speak for the other members of this website, but I am frankly very glad to have you here. I think you'll find there's absolutely no litmus test at all for membership on this website (something which occasionally leads to occasional irritation), and you needn't worry at all about posting your honest opinions. Please proceed. I hope your ideas are original...or at the very least, interesting restatements of old ones.

Thanks for the welcome.  Frankly, although I loved being part of RedState, it was a litmus test issue that caused me to leave.  It's also nice to see that I'm not the only one who writes in the wee hours of the morning.

I'm a paleocon myself, sort of halfway between the socons and the libertarians.

I can't stand neocons (or PNACers, or whatever you want to call them).

That said, I would never be prejudiced against the source of a good idea.

I've been around for a couple of months, but I haven't posted yet.  Working on two posts though.  I tend toward analysis & theory or satire.  You can find an example here.

There are disagreements here.  There have been some rather heated ones.  But we always draw together.

The Next Right is a different sort of place.  People aren't so concerned about being shills for the party line.  In fact, you will see quite a bit of criticism of GOP leaders, representatives, candidates, etc.  We are more about the conservative movement as a whole rather than the party.

It is likely that you would be a welcome voice.

You were being a complete and total asswipe, who apparently can't be bothered to read the UserGuidelines--trollratings get you banned, not innocuous comments. Also, violence tends to get you banned, unless you apologize.

Have you ever read the FAQ on Kos?

If you wanted to go back and talk on StreetProphets (which is much much more laid back about trollery than Kos, you could simply apologize to pastordan for the misunderstanding, and say that you forgot to read his "Don't be a Hater" shpiel, and that you agree to disagree civily.). I have stated this before, but you apparently don't understand.

If you were to generate a new Kos account, and look at my troll-rated history, you'd find it about as blue as some of the comments I make here. The thing is: i provide actual interesting commentary AS WELL, so I don't get banned, because people uprate other posts of mine.

In the first one, I find 11 comments of mine.  The last one did have profanity, and you can see the context here.

In the second post, I find a total of 1 comment, which is the one I duplicated in its entirety above.

 

Where are these phony comments coming from?

Am I to believe that you have access to deleted comments that only a DKos administrator would have?

Your offensive comments were hidden via the mechanism of people giving them hide ratings. Banned users - like yourself - and members of the general public cannont see hidden comments - that is what the hiding mechanism is for.

Regular users can see them.

Is there anyone else reading this who has trusted user statuse on DKos? If so, can you search "Progressive Traditionalist" comments, sorted by time, and verify what I am saying is correct?

Alternatively, if someone can tell me how to post a screen shot here, I would be happy to do that to demonstrate that what I am saying is absolutely true.

PT, if I were going to make up a string of profanity and invective and ascribe it to you, I'd be one heck of a lot more creative - and less repetitive.

For what it's worth, you actually managed to piss off JCFleetguy, the conservative Christian on the site. That's generally a good indication that you've pushed WAY too many buttons. Streetprophets is about everyone getting together and not trying to say that "your way is wrong" so much as sharing theological experiences, and analysis on the politics of religion.

If you come across like Ann coulter, it's very likely that you will hurt people on pastordan's site. Many religious people there have a personal stake in things that you may consider abstract. Also, pastordan very much believes that everything should be discussed Civily. That is to say, don't insult other people and particularly don't insult their beliefs in a higher power. You did that, you got banned.

Did you even bother to read the site guidelines for StreetProphets?

Welcome aboard, I am fairly new here and this gives me an opportunity on just where I sit also. I have done a lot of blasting on Bush and maybe offensive to those that are on here. I personally don't care who is democrat or republican, I just want management. I do not here this word floating around here with the words socialists, nazi's, fascism, neocons, capitalists, and whatever else.

All I care about is making things work. CEO's manage, managers manage, coaches manage, but it seems like that some people do not believe a president should manage. I guess the only other person in the world that does not manage is the Queen of England. Eisenhower managed and he put an interstate system in. That increased commerce and tourism. Somehow we went into a world of ideology. And I don't get it from the left on welfare to the right of just tax cuts and euphoria.

So that is where I stand. Good luck. I am sure we will arm wrestle a few times, if they allow me to do that.

The folks on this site are about as civil and respectful a group as I have seen anywhere. But they still keep the discussion lively and heated.

As a liberal I'm sure some see me as a troll just for having the temerity to come here with a set of views that are not in agreement with conservative orthodoxy. But others engage. And I find the challenges invigorating to my thought process.
