Quick Thoughts On McCain's Decision To Suspend His Campaign
(1) I don't like the decision to suspend his campaign. For one thing, I think it is lose-lose for him. If there is a deal, it is going to be extremely unpopular with large swaths of the electorate. The politically savvy decision, at least in the short term, is to rail against Wall Street bailouts while hoping the deal goes through. If there is no deal, John McCain looks like he can't get things done.
(2) I also don't like it because it reeks of desperation. This is especially apparent at a time when the bottom really is falling out for McCain's polling numbers. It's still a long way to November, but it isn't THAT long.
(3) On the other hand, just because I don't like it, doesn't mean that he didn't have to do it. It's a desperate sounding move, but I do think with what's going on in the polls, he had to do something. And he may have already been in a no-win situation. As a friend of mine put it, "worst of all worlds he let Paulson and Bush drive bailout story for a week, then show up at a national security debate and have America think of him as the out of touch guy still hung up on the Surge. Now he is a leader, seeking to achieve bipartisan consensus to avoid catastrophe. He neutralizes Obama's advantage because Obama has to fall in line behind the bailout Dodd will no-doubt drive through congress. Now the economy is moot as they both support the same deal, only McCain is seen as a leader and Obama a follower. Debates resume next week, and McCain not seen as out of touch."
(4) Since a lot of the cash for the campaign is going to come from the RNC and 527 groups, I'm not sure what the decision to "suspend his campaign" really means, in practical terms.
(5) So it may well be that this is the best way to play an awful hand. Time will tell.

Who is his VP?
So is McCain saying that Sarah Palin is so weak that she can not handle the campaign for a couple of days? My God you could not make this stuff up, and have people believe it!!!!!!
Question?
No.
There is no way McCain is dropping the first female Republican Vice Presidential nominee in history 6 weeks before the election.
None.
Zero.
Nada.
What a stupid question
It is possible you are just throwing that out there, because gaffe-a-day Biden has been doing so badly on the campaign trail there are these equally absurd claims that HE would get replaced by Hillary in an October surprise, and you want to horn in on some balance?
Never mind the pesky detail of the fact that nominations are done and no-can-do. Never mind the fact that Palin has been a great asset to the McCain campaign and it helped help secure the lead for a while.
I guess you cant cure stupid, but I'd rate this the dumbest speculation of the season, and there's been some stiff competition!
Okay, now that was a rather biazrre unsolicited remark!
Wow, man I just don't know what to say to that bit of moonbattery. I guess my only question would be, do people fly like Superman in your world?
The Double (U) Dealer
"So it may well be that this is the best way to play an awful hand."
And the dealer of that hand is George W. Bush. Even if McCain wins he is going to drive conservative nuts because he is to the left of Bush, but still way better than Obama.
Conservatives have had their hands wrapped around their ankles because of W for several years now and our palms will be firmly in place for at least another two.

Burning Down The House: What Caused Our Economic Crisis?
Democrats in Congress are to blame for this mess
Why is there media silence on this fact? ...
http://travismonitor.blogspot.com/2008/09/blame-fannie-mae-and-congress-...
"In order to curry congressional support after their accounting scandals in 2003 and 2004, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac committed to increased financing of “affordable housing.” They became the largest buyers of subprime and Alt-A mortgages between 2004 and 2007, with total GSE exposure eventually exceeding $1 trillion. In doing so, they stimulated the growth of the subpar mortgage market and substantially magnified the costs of its collapse." ...
"If the Democrats had let the 2005 legislation come to a vote, the huge growth in the subprime and Alt-A loan portfolios of Fannie and Freddie could not have occurred, and the scale of the financial meltdown would have been substantially less. The same politicians who today decry the lack of intervention to stop excess risk taking in 2005-2006 were the ones who blocked the only legislative effort that could have stopped it."
He's done it again!!!
I think McCain has just jumped his last shark.
His final nobel deed reminds me of another famous interaction:
King Arthur: [after Arthur's cut off both of the Black Knight's arms] Look, you stupid Bastard. You've got no arms left.
Black Knight: Yes I have.
King Arthur: *Look*!
Black Knight: It's just a flesh wound.
Denial is a wonderful thing if you've become hopeless and helpless.
The reason the bottom is falling out ...
...for McCains polling numbers is simple. He reluctantly moved to the right by appointing Palin. He and his mixed up handlers gave each other high 5's and a wink afterwards then bragged, "hey we threw those hayseed-hick conservatives some crumbs and by golly they gobbled them up. Now we can return to what we love best - dealing with our democrat friends on the other side of the isle. My friend."
Self destruction. Its an amazing thing to witness. But if they want the poll numbers to move back in the + direction they're going to have to do something that is abhorrent to them. Yes they'll have to fake it for the next 40 days. They'll have to act like, dress like, and talk like conservatives.
Here's an idea. The McCain team could hire a film crew over the next 40 days to follow them around. Then after the election they could submit the finished product to that TV show called "Dirty Jobs". I mean what could be a dirtier job for Sen. McCain than having to feign conservatism? Just a thought. Darvin Dowdy

...what would be your explanation why McCain's poll numbers are dropping? You know I have a right to be critical of the GOP. I've voted straight GOP since the early '80's. And will again on 11/4/08. The worst Repbulican is light years ahead of the best democrat, as it stands now. DD
The polls coming out today show McCain tied or back in the lead.
It appears whatever his strategy is its working. McCain has shown more leadership than the Obombo on this mess who can't get past the Democrat talking points and blaming Bush. This race is far from over and despite the media's best efforts, the Palin-smearing, the McCain = Bush meme and the Obamessiah's preaching the gospel of change is not playing all that well.
Hope/Pray you're right BB...
...but in my opinion McCain should be 10 pts ahead of Obama. If he'd place emphasis on he and Palins conservative values and sharply contrast them to Obama's socialist stance. He's done some of that w/his ad's. But not enough personally. He must personally reach out to the conservatives.
A great 1st step today would be for him not to be critical [and maybe a little supportive] of the "renegade Repub's" in the Congress who are resisting this bailout. These few valiant warriors are drawing cheers from conservatives nation wide. If McCain criticizes them, watch those polls drop again. DD
Does anyone know who they are?
I've read some things about the renegade Republicans this morning, but I was curious if there was a list out there of who they are?
I, too, support them and their cause... but the media has been horrible on this.
Reading last evening around 5pm, the last I saw was B.Frank and other Dems' saying "we're close to a deal"... I was thinking, "Jeesh...! Here we go again..."
So reading this morning about the congressional Republicans was great news to me!
Yup thats right~~!
If McCain criticizes them, watch those polls drop again
