EXCLUSIVE: LA-04 Primary: Gorman ahead

Candidate % Q1 FEC
Gorman 25  $368,929
Fleming 14  $253,125
Thompson 10  Did not file?
Bowen 2  Did not file?

This is almost certainly a safe GOP seat. There is, basically, a 3-way primary. Chris Gorman's campaign releases polling that puts them ahead. He is running against John Fleming and Jeff Thompson. Jim McCrery, the retiring incumbent, is endorsed Thompson. The numbers are from the memo, and the fundraising numbers from the Green Papers.

I don't know much about this race, but I can't imagine that McCrery's endorsement is super-valuable. I imagine that Jindal's might be a game changer. Anyone have some more info? I believe that we have some Louisiana readers.

About what I thought...

...the politicos across the state have buzzed about Gorman's campaign to date.  There are three main things those in the know say: 1.) He seems to be everywhere courting GOP voters; 2.) He is raising money like a veteran; and, 3.) He is building a solid GOP network.  Though qualifying for the race is in a month, smart money players say Gorman is the man to beat in the September primary.  These early poll numbers seem to support that line of thinking.

How would you describe Gorman?

Is he a grassroots conservative?  A "compassionate conservative"?  A reformer?

He's characterized as a

He's characterized as a grassroots conservative from what I hear.  For instance, his stances listed on his issues page say he's against Bush's amnesty, but for making the tax cuts permanent.  Gorman also seems to be the only candidate to map out a detailed plan on illegal immigration.  Some good meat there.  His bullets remind some of the new LA governor Bobby Jindal - who was famous for his detailed plans.  I read where Gorman served on Jindal's transition team, so it's probably a trait passed on to the newer of the two candidates.

On McCrery's Endorsement...

...state GOP polling that I've seen shows McCrery is, in fact, a net positive to Thompson.  However, (and this is a big however) consensus is that Thompson is himself a very bad candidate in many respects.  First, many warning bells have sounded in GOP circles about his profession - a trial attorney.  He's sued far to many companies in the Shreverport area to make many conservative leaders comfortable.  Second, most in political circles had never heard of him prior to his announcement - prompting much speculation as to the root cause of McCrery's endorsement of him.  And third, well, there's really no nice way to say this - but he is seriously gravitationally challenged, somewhere north of 350lbs. is the buzz.  Certainly not a reason to vote against the guy, but on a platform with the other two GOP candidates in the race, I am told he just doesn't look the part.

Gorman? You're kidding, right?

Maybe you have a crush on him (he tried to be a model, you know), but Gorman isn't real. He's propped up with daddy's money. There's no substance to him.

Thompson doesn't have reputation larepublican claims. I know the guy. He mainly does real estate law.  The Gorman flunkies are either uninformed (like their candidate) or just lying about Thompson's background.

As for being known, nobody knows Gorman, either. That's probably because he didn't move here until 2005... at least that's when he registered to vote here. Gorman has spent a lot of daddy's money to buy name recognition, so the poll numbers are just smoke at this point.

It boils down to this: Gorman is a pretender. Thompson is the only candidate who can beat Carmouche in the general election.

Just posting numbers friend

I have reached out to the other campaigns to give me material.
