McCotter on the 2008 issue environment
by Soren Dayton | June 9, 2008 at 1:01 PM
On Friday, I sat down with Rep. Thad McCotter (R-MI), the Chairman of the House Republican Policy Committee. We had a reasonably wide-ranging discussion. You can watch all of the segments here, and I will be posting them regularly here and at Redstate. In this one, McCotter explains that the issue environment may not be as bad for us as we may think.
What do you think? Do you buy this? I confess to being somewhat skeptical.

So
How come our Canidate for President isn't running on any of these
Taxes, gas prices, and Iraq
John McCain has clear proposals on everything but gas prices and they are in line with these.
Then why is it
On the Campaign Trail I hear McCain talk about Global Warming, Amnesty, and how we need to be nicer to Obama.
Where is McCain talking about how much Obama wants to raise gas prices. No where because McCain wants to raise them more.
Where is he on attacking Obama's support of the winfall tax? no where because he supported doing nearly the same thing to the Pharmacueticals industry
Where is he talking about how Obama went from Moderate on health care to full out nationalization talk
no where because John McCain doesn't believe that kind of talk will win him this election
Really...
Taxes: McCain is flip-flopping on them. He was against the Bush tax cuts, but now he's for them. That's leadership from the John Kerry playbook. I frankly don't trust him on that issue.
Gas Prices: What is McCain's energy policy, except for opposing drilling, ethanol, and nuclear?
Iraq: There are no differences between McCain and Obama, except on rhetoric.
"no differences between McCain and Obama"???
I do not know what planet you are on.
Simple
Both men talk about drawing down US forces to about 60-80 thousand.
In Obama's plan they would be there (not based in Iraq but In Iraq) to fight Al-Qaeda in Iraq.
but he wouldn't force the Iraqis into giving us bases
thats what he calls a withdrawl
explain how thats different from What McCain's "Year 2013" would be like?
In McCain's 2013
Al Queda will have been defeated - in Obama's world, AQI would still be around & our troops would be playing cat & mouse with them.
Vast, exponential differences
exist between McCain & Obama. Heck, he's gone the right way on the tax cuts. I disagree with McCain on several issues; however, I don't know an issue on which Obama & I agree. Either Obama or McCain will be president - while McCain isn't perfect by any stretch, he is exponentially better than Obama.
Don't cop out like Dfarrar
You will vote for McCain right?Even though he may not seem to be the perfect candidate in your eyes?
Just say yes, I am too.
Hell, read about his experience as a P.O.W. It sure as hell makes me want to side with him even more than ever now.

Issues that favor Conservatives
Has several polls that show that the issues are not bad for conservatives. (Whether the GOP will have the gonads to take up any of these issues is another story)
1. 60% say no talks with Iran until they halt their nuclear program (http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/election_20082/2...)
2. 60% say tax hikes are bad for the economy
(http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/business/taxes/60_say_tax...)
3. 65% oppose increasing the capital gains tax
http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/business/taxes/65_oppose_...)
Obama comes up on the short end of each of these issues. I cannot believe we are losing to that guy.
The public may not be buying what the Republicans are selling, but they do not seem to be buying what the Democrats are selling either.
Taking up the issues - Guts needed
or gonads, whichever one prefers.
I believe Republicans have been handed a gift with the soaring oil/gas prices & the unwillingness of Democrats to do what it takes to correct this issue. Republican candidates & incumbents, imho, should run with this issue. They should let the voters know we have the oil & safe, cost-effective means to extract & refine this oil into gasoline & end our dependence on OPEC. With the Democrat's love of inquiries, why not inquire as to what effect oil futures speculation has had on artifically inflating the price of oil & gasoline? "Sling 'em over your shoulder," as it were, & go on the offensive - put the Dems on defense, have them defend keeping us dependent on OPEC & the whims of speculators.
