Where are the stories of tax fights?
The left-leaning Center for Budget and Policy Priorities released a report discussing tax increases. (H/T Derek Thompson at the Atlantic) They found that 36 states either have or are considering tax increases. Here's the picture:

Several observations on the list.
California and Florida budget fights have gotten national attention. For California, it was a bunch of ballot initiatives failing. In Florida, Governor Charlie Crist broke tax pledge by signing a number of tax increases, and this has become a rallying cry in the Senate primary.
Six states with Republican governors who are looking at their future are on the list of states that have done nothing. In Minnesota, Governor Tim Pawlenty is clearly looking at running for President. As are South Carolina's Mark Sanford and Alaska's Sarah Palin. Indiana's Mitch Daniels has been put out there and is being considered by some. And Louisiana's Bobby Jindal and Texas's Rick Perry (looking at a primary)
But what I want to know about is the state legislators that are fighting this stuff. Who are the articulate state legislators who are going on the radio and local TV, rallying against these tax increases. Those leaders are redefining the Republican party. They are rebranding the Republican Party by their actions. And they may be winning some of these fights.
Let's hear about them.

Illinois: State Senator Kirk Dillard
He's just announced he going to run for the Republican Party nomination for Governor in 2010.
He's fighting the Democratic Governor, a Democratic State Senate, and a Democratic State Assembly that is trying to increase income taxes.

He's also supporting campaign finance reform for state offices.

Dillard is the former Chief of Staff to two term, and popular, former Republican Governor Jim Edgar.
One CA name
One CA name you'll hear is TomMcClintock. Of course, what those discussing him won't mention is that he's also opposed illegalimmigration, one of the major causes of CA's problems not just because of additional spending but also because it builds a power base for the far-left legislators who then push additional spending. Perhaps the "profits at any price" crowd should face up to the facts instead of misleading about them.
Spending is more important than taxes
One would believe that after eight years of the borrow and spend policies that Republicans would learn to shut up about taxes. Spending is much more important that taxes because high spending leads to higher taxes and spending allows the Democrats to pay off their special intereste groups.
When Republicans decide to talk about spending cuts, then maybe they will have some crediblity in governing. The obsession on taxes without thinking about spending is a fools errand and needs to stop.

Not just Republicans
The Journal had a story about Governor Baldacci in ME who is eager to steal businesses from his more liberal brethren in New England by cutting the top tax rate.
I'm sure the overall impact was revenue positive; but we ought to appreciate the class warfare nonsense getting a rest whenever we can these days.
