Obama Sought Endorsement of Marxist Third Party in 1996

We're only just scratching the surface of Obama's Chicago connections. People will be shocked to hear the things you need to do to run for office in a big city. -Patrick

Here is some interesting as well as character confirming info about one of Barack Obama's former runs for office. Apparently, Obama actively sought and received the stamp of approval of a Marxist third party that operated briefly in Chicago between 1992 and 1998. The group was called the "New Party" and was started in 1992 by Daniel Cantor (a former staffer for Jesse Jackson's 1988 presidential campaign) and Joel Rogers (a sociology and law professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison).

Read on.

The New Party was a Marxist political coalition whose objective was to endorse and elect leftist public officials -- most often Democrats. The New Party's short-term objective was to move the Democratic Party leftward, thereby setting the stage for the eventual rise of new Marxist third party.

Most New Party members hailed from the Democratic Socialists of America and the militant organization ACORN. The party's Chicago chapter also included a large contingent from the Committees of Correspondence, a Marxist coalition of former Maoists, Trotskyists, and Communist Party USA members.

The New Party's modus operandi included the political strategy of "electoral fusion," where it would nominate, for various political offices, candidates from other parties (usually Democrats), thereby enabling each of those candidates to occupy more than one ballot line in the voting booth. By so doing, the New Party often was able to influence candidates' platforms. (Fusion of this type is permitted in seven states -- Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Mississippi, New York, South Carolina, and Vermont -- but is common only in New York.)

Though Illinois was not one of the states that permitted electoral fusion, in 1995 Barack Obama nonetheless sought the New Party's endorsement for his 1996 state senate run. He was successful in obtaining that endorsement, and he used a number of New Party volunteers as campaign workers.

In 1996, three of the four candidates endorsed by the New Party won their electoral primaries. The three victors included Barack Obama (in the 13th State Senate District), Danny Davis (in the 7th Congressional District), and Patricia Martin, who won the race for Judge in the 7th Subcircuit Court. All four candidates attended an April 11, 1996 New Party membership meeting to express their gratitude for the party's support.

The New Party's various chapters similarly helped to elect dozens of other political candidates in a host of American cities.

One of the more notable New Party members was Carl Davidson, a Chicago-based Marxist who became a political supporter of Barack Obama in the mid-1990s.

In 1997 the New Party's influence declined precipitously after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that electoral fusion was not protected by the First Amendment's freedom of association clause. By 1998 the party was essentially defunct. Daniel Canto and other key party members went on to establish a new organization with similar ideals, the Working Families Party of New York.

This news pretty much confirms that Barack Obama is at the very least a neo-Marxist and also confirms the claim that he is one of the most far left leaning Senators we have in office today.

This man is no "new" politician, no "centrist," and not interested in ever "reaching across the aisle." This whole "new way" line of bunkum is all smoke a mirrors.

Very interesting article.

Very interesting article. There's no telling how many of these skeletons he has in his proverbial closet. I think Obama will not just have an October "surprise"...he'll have a june surprise, july surprise, august surprise, etc...

As this CNN post makes clear,

As this CNN post makes clear, the bill contained Obama-sponsored provisions.  Not a "gaffe," but a "mistake."  He meant to say "my bill," because it was his bill.  His campaign has now issued a statement.  I, however, wish you lot good luck in finding better gaffes going forward.  Maybe you can find one somewhere near the border of Pakistan and Iraq?  Or perhaps in Czechoslovakia?

good post

Couldn’t agree with you more sir. The vagueness of his policy direction always sent a chill up my spine. I hope this message can reach the general populace before November. It amazes me that after decades of combating Marxism in all its shattered varieties that now, in the 21st century, America may well elect one of their own after communism has been effectively been discarded into the trash bin of history. Let’s hope that it was not mistakenly placed in the recycle bin.

I think we need another source here.

I think it's very plausible, but I'd like to see more sources.  I'd like to see some more investigating on this story, and I'd like to see it substantiated by a few more people.

Anyway, I think it's likely to be true.

And to think it's only May

There will be dozens of researchers working on, and millions of dollars spent in the next 5 months uncovering the treasure trove of secrets in Obama's past.

Umm, I thought fellow travelers...

were a relic of the 50s.

No, that doesn't "confirm that Obama is at the very least a Neo-Marxist."

All it means is he got an endorsement from the New Party in 1996 (and be careful of basing anything on Discover the Network - it makes wikipedia look authoritative).

There is one socialist in the Senate and his name is Bernie Sanders (and Obama, Reid & others endorsed him because it was either Sanders or Richard Tarrant and Sanders agreed to caucus with the Democrats).  The National Journal survey which named Obama as the most liberal Senator was skewed because Obama missed votes when he was campaigning.  Sanders, Feingold, Kennedy, and several others are more liberal.

Obama is a progressive Democrat. His roots are in the progressive politics of Harold Washington. If you want to understand Obama, you need to learn about Washington. http://www.salon.com/opinion/feature/2008/01/14/obama/

Like Obama, Washington, was a pragmatic progressive, not an ideologue. And like Obama, he ran an amazing campaign that few thought he could win. There's a good episode of This American Life focused on Washington

I was going to the University of Illinois in Urbana when Washington was Mayor. I arrived in Chicago to visit my parents for Thanksgiving just as the news had broken that he had died of a heart attack.

I also took a course on the 60s. Carl Oglesby who had been president of SDS (and was a friend of Hillary Clinton) and Karl Hess who was a speechwriter for Barry Goldwater were guests-in-residence for part of that time and both gave a fascinating perspective.

Yeah, I guess...

Salon.com is a far more authoritative source.  You can nitpick words all you like..."progressive Democrat", "pragmatic progressive"...and you can shoot the messenger (Discoverthenetwork), but I'd say that David Horowitz has a good bit better handle on the 60's, having edited Ramparts, about as far left, Marxist publication as there was, than you, who "took a course on the 60s".  Horowitz knows the people, the organizations, the history, and the tactics of the Left, because he was at it's forefront.  The thread post is spot on in describing Obama's ideology; of course he wouldn't dare attempt to run for president spouting the kinds of drivel that he absorbed as he rose in the bareknuckle ring of Chicago "progressive" politics.  But it does define him, the basis for what can be gleaned about his policy positions (no easy task), and where he would attempt to take the nation.

Not so much

I lived in Hyde Park at the time that Obama was first elected to the state legislator. Calling him a progressive Democrat misses part of his history. From a Chicago Democratic Socalist Newsletter:

Barak Obama is serving only his second term in the Illinois State Senate so he might be fairly charged with ambition, but the same might have be said of Bobby Rush when he ran against Congressman Charles Hayes. Obama also has put in time at the grass roots, working for five years as a community organizer in Harlem and in Chicago. When Obama participated in a 1996 UofC YDS Townhall Meeting on Economic Insecurity, much of what he had to say was well within the mainstream of European social democracy. To volunteer, call 773 846 2262. Contributions may be sent to Obama for Congress 2000, PO Box 497987, Chicago, IL 60649.

If you haven't lived in Berkeley, Hyde Park, parts of Manhattan, Cambridge, or a couple of other places in America, you probably have some trouble understanding Obama's context.

Why am i not surprised, i

Why am i not surprised, i wouldn't expect anything less from someone  who considers infanticide a good thing.

And yes i am talking about osama , er i mean obama b, hussein.

Another Source

I agree that further documentation is needed on this.  I followed the links back, and can find nothing but assertions without documentation.

Surely a Lexis/Nexis search would produce something contemporaneous from the Chicago media?  I would imagine the New Party would have rated coverage on its own, and so would news of Obama being endorsed by them.

I'll follow with interest.

Few Points

1. This goes nowhere if it's not connected to a larger narrative. It should be a salvo of a larger overall thing of this guy is out of touch like the rest of d.c.

2. The polling data was scary but not shocking. If you watched our primary debates and weren't on kool-aid what you saw-I am talking about you here Mitt Romney-were a bunch of people who didn't get it. Our ideas are and attacks like this are good but circa 1988, while the things on peoples minds are circa 2008.

We have kicked the snot out of liberal democrats for a generation at the presidential level because they have been focused on trying to relive 1932, and we are falling dangerously close to that with 1980.

Is anyone really surprised?

Both Obama and Hillary are doing there absoluted best to "change" our country to a socialistic communistic type government.  They both have ties with socialist /communist.

Mr.Huston knows his stuff

I've been keeping up with Warner Todd Hustons' blogging for a few years now and he can usually smell a rat even if it's hiding inside of an Old Spice Aftershave factory. If he is shining a light upon this facet of ObamO CallapsO then you can rest assured that it bears further exploration.

There will be dozens of

There will be dozens of researchers working on, and millions of dollars spent in the next 5 months uncovering the treasure trove of secrets in Obama's past. But I guess he has the most clean history so hope they won't be able to digg much.

Obama' past

Obama is very clean overall and it is going to be very hard to find any significant dirt in his past. In my opinion, you have a better chance searching in his future, as he may hit a wall at some point. Anyway, good luck Obama, we are with you.
